Roger is right about the renters (and home owners too) who live in that area. I have known several of them, good people. I'm sure if there are homeless camps nearby they don't like it one bit.

I don’t understand how the topic of toxic waste from “homeless people “ has anything to do with someone being assaulted?? Can someone please help me understand?

Real renters live over there too just not wealthy people like several who are commenting here.

LADYLOVE - the areas around railroad tracks (where the victim was found) almost always have homeless camps, and in those camps, there is human and chemical waste that is toxic. That's the connection.

Lady. It happens to be in an area that is known to have illegal dwellings that house vagrants and druggies.

Maybe this had to do with the guy walking on the freeway punching at the air and at cars going by.

Roger - "regular" people meaning those not trained in handling hazardous waste.

While I applaud the efforts of the creek and coastal clean ups this weekend. It does not come close to cleaning up all the toxic waste from these illegal dwellings along our creeks and coastal areas. It would be a great day for environmentalists and all humanity if these toxic dumps were dismantled and cleaned up once and for all. They are not homeless folks, they are squatters and they are breaking many laws.

Has there ever been a community work party to clean up the homeless camps? It would take a little organization, but it would be a good weekend project and could be a regional effort. Align the social workers, LEOs, have some Marborg roll offs dropped off, give everyone gloves and bags and get all the crap picked up and thrown out. I'd be happy to donate a Saturday. If we can have beach clean up day, why can't we have homeless camp clean up day?

Maybe it the agencies in charge knew that 100s of people....men, women, and children....are volunteering to go out there to clean them up, that would make the agencies assume their responsibilities and plan a clean up like Goleta and Lompoc did. City of SB, Caltrans, Union Pacific, etc. etc. be on alert. Fredmertzee is correct about the hazmat conditions in the camps.............but those conditions are being brought out on our streets and sidewalks and endangering us anyway.

While I appreciate your spirit and intent, it's important to recognize that homeless camps are basically hazmat sites that are frequently full of hazardous waste (e.g., human waste that can carry diseases), chemicals (e.g., drug making residue, gasoline and oils, etc.) and other significant health risks. That is why firefighters are very careful entering those areas when there is an inevitable fire in them. Under no circumstances should regular people without specific training and protections enter homeless camps and clean them up. They ain't inhabited by friendly rail hopping hobos that just cook beans in a can over a campfire and carry their belongings in a bandana tied to a stick as they travel from place to place.

They're back.....apparently the Goleta ouster of the homeless along the RR tracks didn't last long

OOPS - the clean out along the tracks was further west (north) of Fairview, I think.
