4.6 Magnitude Earthquake in Malibu Gives South Coast a Little Jolt

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck near Malibu on Friday afternoon prompting a little jolt to be felt on the South Coast.

The quake hit approximately 7.45 miles northwest of Malibu at 1:47 p.m. at a depth of nearly nine miles.

An series of aftershocks followed minutes later ranging from 3.0 to 2.6 magnitudes between 1:49 and 1:51 p.m.

The National Weather Service has confirmed there are no tsunami warnings and no anticipated danger from the earthquakes.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is compiling reports from as far north as Santa Cruz and south into Ensenada, Mexico.

“A few quick jolts just a few minutes ago, was that an earthquake?” and “Something big just caused my overhead lamp to swing!”

So far there have not been reports of damage near the epicenter.
