Roe v. Wade Rally at De La Guerra Plaza

By Marian Shapiro
Here are my photos from the Roe V. Wade Rally on Wednesday at De La Guerra Plaza.
Each of the speakers were excellent, powerful and inspirational. Speakers were Rev. Mark Asman, Rev. Julia Hamilton, Dr. Jenna Tosh CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Central Coast, Mayor Cathy Murillo, Senator Monique Limon, and Luz Reyes-Martin, Vice President of Community Engagement for Planned Parenthood California Central Coast.

Dec 03, 2021 09:56 AMIt's a baby if it's born, it's a fetus when its in utero. Fetuses do not have "rights," as they are not being yet. It's up to the mother and her doctor to determine what the best options are. That's constitutional law,

Dec 03, 2021 09:57 AM9:29 - exactly, so if it doesn't affect others, other than the mother and the fetus/cluster of cells, then it's not the same as COVID. Therefore, you can say "my body, my choice" about abortion, but the same doesn't ring true for the vax, because, as you indirectly pointed out, not being vaxxed is not just about "my body," it's about EVERYONE else's body too.

Dec 03, 2021 10:35 AM"Fetuses don't have rights" is the worst take yet. Why is someone charged with TWO murders when they kill a pregnant person?

Dec 03, 2021 10:40 AMCONSERVATIVE - that's only true in some states and it depends on the stage of pregnancy. Nice try though, I'll say that!

Dec 03, 2021 12:24 PM....depends on the stage of pregnancy. Finally getting to some of the nuance of the issue. I'd be shocked and outraged if commenters here thought an abortion a day before the due date for non-medical reasons was acceptable for our society, for any society. So somewhere between the due date and back when a single cell first splits into two cells is the line. That is what being discussed in the courts now, and if that line should be determined by the federal government or the state governments.

Dec 03, 2021 01:08 PMNo one is debating whether a fetus should be aborted the day before delivery, NO ONE. The only people saying this crap is the impeached president and religious wing nuts who don't understand what an abortion really is. If a fetus dies the day before a delivery, it's a miscarriage or stillbirth and its awful and tragic but not an abortion. No doctor has ever or will ever advocate for abortion that close to term. Idiocy all around VOR, geez.
-
-
4
-
Dec 03, 2021 01:27 PMThat "line" is exactly what's being debated.
-
5
-
-
Dec 03, 2021 01:38 PMThe "line" has already been established. You can get an abortion later than 24 weeks ONLY in rare cases for medical reasons. Conservatively oppressive states are now moving the line, 6 weeks in Texas. As a woman who has been pregnant, you get your genetic screening tests from 20-22 weeks. This tells you if there is anything wrong with the fetus or the likelihood of its survival to term. If there is something awfully wrong, women only have about 2 weeks to make the decision whether to continue the pregnancy or not. Sometimes the dr's offices are booked or slow and the test results come back late making this a very stressful situation.

Dec 03, 2021 02:37 PM1:27 I agree. To be more specific, what several states are trying to argue is it's up to the states to determine the "line" not the federal government. Even if the supremum court makes a major change to the precedent (unlikely), it merely goes back to each state and their voters to determine what their state wants.
-
3
-
-
Dec 04, 2021 12:52 PMEven if the supremum court makes a major change to the precedent (unlikely)" -- how extraordinarily ignorant. The SCOTUS is almost certain to uphold the Mississippi law and possibly go even further in dismantling Roe. When they do, rights to an abortion will die in numerous states with "trigger" laws. These laws are not the will of the people, but rather of right wing legislatures that are in place due to gerrymandering, voter suppression, and outright fraud.

Dec 03, 2021 09:17 AMGreat point and original comment Coast and Conservative! You're both so right, a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body when pregnant is exactly the same as an infectious disease that is spread unknowingly (or knowingly if you're the last prez) to innocent people. Exactly the same, abortions are just as infectious. No need to discuss further, you're both geniuses.

Dec 03, 2021 09:53 AMThe spread needs to stop with both issues.

Dec 03, 2021 09:57 AMThe vaccines slow the spread and unvaccinated people spread the virus at higher rates than unvaccinated people. Plus, less chance of dying when vaccinated.

Dec 03, 2021 10:58 AMPassing criminal laws for Vaginas/Women and not an equal criminal law for penises/Men is Discrimination of the law and a violation of the 14 Amendment. The law can not be biased and deny any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. Without sperm there is no baby and therefore the law must be equal and make it a crime for a male to fertilize a Women's egg resulting in an UNWANTED pregnancy. Making it a crime for women and not for men is a violation of the law, the law can not be biased towards women!!!

-
Dec 03, 2021 11:56 AMSun--hard to follow your thoughts. It is in fact illegal for a male to impregnate a female without consent (including the idea that underage females cannot consent voluntarily). In such cases the female does not face criminal jeopardy but the male does. The laws restricting abortion are not directed at the female per se but in perceived defense of the unborn child. (Not saying I agree with such laws.)

Dec 03, 2021 12:44 PM@a-1638561404 It is quite simple to follow. the proposed law discriminates against women based on SEX in violation of the 14 Amendment.

Dec 03, 2021 01:22 PMSUN - I'm 100% pro choice and pretty liberal, but I think you're missing that women aren't being penalized for having sex or even becoming pregnant. What the anti-choice crowd wants, and what Texas has done, is to be able to penalize them for choosing to abort the fetus. It's completely wrong, but it's a little different than what you're arguing.

Dec 03, 2021 01:36 PM@ SACJON Unfortunatly you misunderstand the definition of SEX as it pertains to the
14 Amendment...it does not refer to the act of having sex it refers to gender... male, female or other.

Dec 03, 2021 01:36 PMSUN - huh? Of course that's what it means. I never said the 14th protects the act of sex.....

Dec 03, 2021 01:42 PM@SACJON Since men cannot become pregnant, the law is discriminatory towards women ...women who choose to abort...

-
Dec 03, 2021 01:49 PMSUN - if men were able to become pregnant and abort but only women were penalized for aborting, you'd be right. That's not the case. Now, if they forced a woman against her will to have sex, get pregnant and/or abort, they'd be penalized for that.
-

-
-
Dec 03, 2021 03:03 PM@SANJON The fact is, Women can only get pregnant, men cannot...that in itself demonstrates the law is discriminates against women who choose to abort. It is a women's body inside and out, no one owns another person's body.

Dec 04, 2021 12:46 PM"you're missing that women aren't being penalized for having sex or even becoming pregnant"
Sac proves over and over again that someone can be "pretty liberal" without knowing anything. Penalizing women for having sex is a huge component of anti-abortion sentiment.

Dec 03, 2021 12:01 PMThe far right extremists always want to take control of women's bodies. Put them in their place. Take away all of their rights. Far right fascist control by the minority based on religous BS that less than 40% of the country believes in. Stop legislating morality.

Dec 03, 2021 01:33 PM1:23 (VOICE) - How about you explain why it's wrong instead of just saying so? Does or does not most of the far right espouse extreme religious values? Are or are not such values, at their core, based on male supremacy and subservience of women? Answer is yes, they do and they are. Not a chance in heck you can convince us that the far right is not archaically religious.

Dec 03, 2021 12:17 PMSome of these comments are really something and so hypocritical. I'm not necessarily anti abortion, I feel that is between a woman and her own soul/spirit and God but, I do know a couple of people who found out later in life that their mothers were considering aborting them. Ask them how they feel about the "cluster of fetal cells". It's funny how some exhibit such compassion only towards certain people/groups, but none towards others. Either you are compassionate or your're not, there is no picking and choosing here. Some of you need some seriously soul and spirit searching.

Dec 03, 2021 12:18 PM"Cluster of fetal cells" argument I mean. It's life, period. You'd be horrified if someone kicked a pregnant woman in the stomach killing the baby wouldn't you? At any stage, even 1st trimester, causing a miscarriage. Or nah, then you would change your compassion again or views? Good grief.

Dec 03, 2021 12:41 PMThe mothers you mentioned "considered" aborting but ultimately chose not to. I know a number of people that had abortions and are extremely grateful they did. Their lives would be drastically different (for the worse) had they not had the option. It's hardly a decision any woman is happy or proud about. It has real world implications on their lives, their families, and the community. It's an extremely difficult decision each woman has to make for herself based on her individual circumstances. It's not a decision that should be made for them by anyone else.

Dec 03, 2021 12:55 PMIn most states it's only a baby if the mother decides it is, charging someone for homicide is usually optional. Oddly, assaulting a pregnant woman and causing a miscarriage the only instance in law where the humanity of one person (in utero) is dependent on the decision of another person (the mother).

Dec 03, 2021 02:44 PMThis is a women's health issue.
Safe and legal abortions must be available to the current generation and for future generations.
There will always be abortions; we must keep them safe and accessible for all women, not just wealthy ones.
Women do not need others to control their bodies.
Women do not need others to control the choices they make for their own bodies.
