SBCC School of Extended Learning Moves Classes to Live Online Format, Week of March 30

Rapid response to COVID-19 situation prompts first-ever transition to live synchronous videoconferencing classes for tuition-free programs

SBCC School of Extended Learning will move instruction to a live synchronous videoconferencing format using the program Zoom for its tuition-free Spring and Summer classes. Over two hundred classes will be offered as scheduled. Classes normally held at Wake Campus, Schott Campus and other community locations will be offered in this online live format for the remainder of Spring Semester and for the two Summer Sessions. Information and resources are continually updated at the Extended Learning homepage at sbcc.edu/ExtendedLearning.

Tuition-free programs now offered in live, synchronous videoconferencing format include Adult High School/GED, Bilingual GED, Bilingual Computer Skills, Career Skills Institute, Noncredit ESL, Health and Safety, Older Adults, Parenting, and the Vitality Program. The list of classes, instructor email addresses and support information are available from the homepage or at http://sbcc.edu/extendedlearning/sel_online_classes.php. Students already registered for classes are being emailed instructions to their student “pipeline” email addresses.

Community members who have recently been laid off can attend courses to upskill and update their resumes through the Career Skill Institute classes. See Career Skills Institute for details of classes.

Remaining Fee-based spring classes have been canceled. Students have been notified by email about cancelations and refund procedures, and can visit Fee-Based Life Enhancement for more information.

“We are aiming to keep over six thousand adults of all ages engaged and connected as a community,” said Dr. Melissa V. Moreno, Vice President, School of Extended Learning. “Extended Learning staff, faculty and leadership are working tirelessly to enable thousands of adults to have access to their classes and maintain their strong community connections to one another during this challenging time. Live conferencing helps bring some normalcy and comfort to our new stay-at-home status.”

Extended Learning classes start every week throughout the semester, and new students may still join the many 8-week classes that are already in progress.
