Way Back When: How About Some Barnacle Chowder?

By Betsy J. Green

Apparently, there was a fad for barnacle broth back in 1918. Longtime SB fisherman Sebastian Larco told the local paper, “Every kind of seafood is good, if only you know how to prepare it … There is no reason why a barnacle should not be as good as an oyster. They eat the same kind of food and live under the same conditions.” He didn’t mention if he had tried it, however.

Betsy’s Way Back When book — 1918 — is now available in local bookstores and at Amazon.com. This is the fifth book in my series of the history of Santa Barbara, one year at a time.
