Santa Maria Shooting Victim Dies from Injuries

On Sunday afternoon, detectives from the Santa Maria Police Department were notified that the victim in this shooting died while in the hospital.  He has been identified as 26-year-old Ruben Zarate Luis, a Santa Maria resident.

On Saturday, June 26, 2021, at about 11:35 PM, Santa Maria Police were sent to the area of Lincoln and Mill in regards to a shooting victim on the sidewalk.  Upon officers’ arrival they located the victim on scene.

The adult male victim was transported to an area hospital via Calstar Air Medical Services and was listed in stable condition.  The motive for the shooting is unknown and is being investigated by the Santa Maria Police Detective Bureau.

Santa Maria Police Detectives are still searching for the suspect in a homicide which occurred in the same vicintiy on May 16, 2021.  The suspect in that investigation has been identified as Alfredo Alaniz Jr, 21 years of age and a resident of Santa Maria.

Alaniz is described as a Hispanic male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighs around 210 pounds with black hair and green eyes.  He has a tattoo of a “S” on his right cheek and a tattoo of a ship on the left side of his head.  There is no indication that the two investgations are related.
