Bike Share Pilot Program: More Stations Coming Soon

Source: City of Santa Barbara

Since launch, BCycle bike share users have ridden over 350,000 miles and taken over 90,000 trips, and the BCycle system continues to grow! Despite COVID-related chip shortages, 65 new docks will be installed in the coming weeks to further expand the bike share network.

Just in time for spring, BCycle Santa Barbara will be expanding the bike share network in the coming weeks. This expansion brings locations to the Mesa and additional docks to the Westside and throughout the City. COVID-related semiconductor delays pushed back the installation of additional stations, but the docks have arrived and new stations will be online soon.

Since the three year Bike Share Pilot Program launched on January 28, 2021, BCycle users have taken over 90,000 trips and ridden over 350,000 miles. Operated by BCycle, the Bike Share Pilot Program provides an affordable point-to-point e-bike ride with easy access to key destinations. Designed with short trips in mind, bike sharing is great for those trips that are too far to walk, but too close to drive. The Pilot Program will include the installation of 500 docks that will serve a fleet of around 250 pedal-assist e-bikes. Currently there are 140 bikes and 273 docks in service, with more locations slated for future installation.

  1. This is the city bike lobby at work. Ignore reality (lack of use by commuters which was the excuse for the dedication of public property to private enterprise) and proceed with the big lie “If we build it they will come.” I observe that the main users of these bikers are tourists. And this means they are stealing customers from the private companies who pay leases and overhead. If people want to ride bikes they will do so without this intrusion in the rights of others.

  2. Seeing that some employees of the City wrote this press release and added their own exclamation points to really get the blood pumping, these employees also benefit directly from this contract. And at the loss of business to other private businesses. The City “Staff” is giving away our City streets and parks so that selected “partners” can make a nice profit, with a kickback to the City. Similar to Putin and the Oligarchs. How is that working out?
