A large section of an oceanfront patio in Isla Vista collapsed during the rainstorm this past weekend.

An edhat reader captured a photo and reports the the deck and a section of the cliff at 6641 Del Playa Drive collapsed on Saturday, March 30.

About half of the tile deck fell into the ocean with the rest of the patio tile cracked at different heights leading back to the house, the edhat reader reported.

“I feel like it could go at anytime. It’s not safe, especially with Deltopia coming up,” the reader stated.

The unsanctioned festival weekend known as Deltopia is “scheduled” to take place this coming weekend as students return from Spring Break.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office issued important safety tips for those planning on visiting Isla Vista this weekend and mentioned bluff safety.

“The bluffs along Isla Vista’s coastline are dangerous to stand on. Falls from the bluffs occur nearly every year, sometimes with fatal consequences. Please remain on the proper side of all fencing or railing near the bluff’s edge to prevent injury,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

This past February an apartment building in the 6700 block of Del Playa Drive eroded prompting at least 45 people to evacuate. The cliff erosion took a big section of an apartment’s oceanfront patio causing structural concerns.

It’s unclear if the building at 6641 Del Playa Drive has been evacuated or assessed by building inspectors.
