A 90-year-old man is remembered with a memorial on State Street after he died from his injuries this week after being hit by a vehicle when crossing the street.

Gilbert Ramirez was struck by a vehicle while walking in the mid-block State Street crosswalk between Cota and Haley Streets.

The driver of the vehicle stopped and cooperated with the investigation, but has not been named.

KEYT reporter John Palminteri reported that flowers and a handmade cross were placed at the scene by Ramirez’s son Armando.

Ramirez was a World War II Navy veteran who volunteered at the age of 17. He was assigned to the Pacific region manning a refueling tanker near the Marshall Islands. Ramirez officially received his diploma from Santa Barbara High in a special ceremony in 2017. He would have graduated in 1947 if he did not go into the service, reports John Palminteri.

On Saturday, February 24, Roger the Scanner Guy reported a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on State Street with serious injuries.

A memorial Facebook page has been set up in honor of Ramirez. Below is a video of him being interviewed on K-LITE’s radio station in 2013.
