A traffic pursuit on SR-246 near Lompoc resulted in a collision where Sheriff’s Deputies were trapped by live powerlines on their vehicle.

At 3:49 p.m., Santa Barbara County firefighters responded to a reported vehicle accident near Sweeney Road. The Lompoc Fire Department were the first on the scene and learned that Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Deputies were in pursuit of a Honda coupe with two occupants.

According to County Fire Public Information Officer Mike Eliason, the Honda crashed into a power pole that brought down live wires on the Sheriff cruiser, trapping the deputies. The two occupants in the Honda, one male and one female, sustained minor and moderate injuries in the crash.

The deputies stayed put and were safe in the vehicle due to the rubber tires. They were trapped for 30 minutes awaiting PG&E while California Highway Patrol detained the suspects.

It’s unknown at this point what started the pursuit, but the roadway will be closed for another hour.
