Last week there were at least two occurrences of mail being stolen from several mailboxes, and packages being stolen from a doorstep, in our neighborhood on Mountain Drive near Sheffield Reservoir. On Monday the 17th it was a whole week's worth of mail that had been delivered by the PO after a vacation hold. There were checks and gifts in both mail and packages stolen later in the week. Keep your eye out for bad actors!

Sorry to hear about your horrible experience of losing mail and packages. Seems like there were hoards of thieves out this year.

Is losing your mail and possibly checks, packages or bills that may become overdue cheaper than a lockable box? If I were targeted, that's the question I'd ask.

Why don't people living in more remote areas install large lockable mail boxes?? In the era of identity theft,. There is just too much at risk and a pretty simple and effective solution.

OP here. We aren't exactly remote here, ten minutes to downtown, houses all around. First time it's happened in 37 years, but yes, we plan to install locked boxes and other security "features". 97% of the mail goes straight to recycling, so we'll be paying a lot to protect that junk! Reported it to caution others in the area, but thanks for the suggestions--not so much for the judgment.

Have you researched the process and cost of implementing lockable mailboxes via our wonderful USPS? Feel free to contribute to the OPs expenses as freely as you contribute what is NOT a simple solution.

For hold mail service, you can choose the "pickup" option to avoid the OP's situation.

If impractical to use any of the video surveillance options, one can also look at a motion-activated "
game cam" that can be secured to a wall, fence post, etc. The key to those units is to look for one that does not have any "lag" time between the motion being detected and the video beginning to record.
