Santa Maria SWAT Arrest Violent Suspect in Santa Barbara Hotel
Source: Santa Barbara Police Department
On the afternoon of June 3, 2022, the Santa Barbara Police Department was contacted by the Santa Maria Police Department about a wanted attempt murder suspect that was staying at a Santa Barabra hotel on Cabrillo Blvd. The suspect was involved in a serious felony domestic violence incident several days ago in the City of Santa Maria.
Santa Maria Police received information pertaining to the location of the suspect. Santa Barbara Police were notified that a joint law enforcement contingency from Santa Maria would be the primary entity serving the arrest and search warrants for the wanted subject who was in the City of Santa Barbara. A contingent of Santa Barbara Police law enforcement officers were present during the execution of the warrant.
On June 4, 2022, around 2:00 am, Santa Maria Police Department SWAT conducted a warrant service on the hotel room the suspect was staying in.
The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Santa Barbara County Jail for booking.
This case is still an active investigation by the Santa Maria Police Department. Further inquiries about this investigation should be referred to Lt. R. Mengel – 805-928-3781 ext. 1281, rmengel@cityofsantamaria.org

Jun 08, 2022 09:41 PMBasic - Yes, "really." Also of interest, as of this date, unless I've missed it, it appears the name of the suspect has not yet been identified.

Jun 08, 2022 08:19 PMDoulie - it is a bit odd. I’m guessing the feds (in some capacity and for some reason) were involved and pulled jurisdiction…
“ Santa Barbara Police were notified that a joint law enforcement contingency from Santa Maria would be the primary entity serving the arrest”
For some reason (and under some authority) someone in Santa Maria called lead and SB fell in line…

Jun 06, 2022 07:19 PMWhat’s your actual question? Seems pretty reasonable that The Santa Maria swat team was available and with the scene quiet and secure it made sense to let them handle it. There are a ton of other plausible explanations…why are you so worried?

Jun 08, 2022 02:51 PMIf the guy is in a hotel room at midnight, doesn't know he is being watched, only has one way out, they let him sleep until the police from the jurisdiction over the crime show up. Saves paperwork, and it is a less complicated transaction.
I'm confident SBPD were not going to let the "attempted murder" guy just leave the scene at 1:30AM just because SM SWAT was still 30 minutes out

Jun 08, 2022 02:26 PMWell Doulie...I don't have a good answer! Maybe SB SWAT wasn't available (for whatever reason) so the next closest team was called? They reference "joint law enforcement contingent" from Santa Maria would be the lead...so maybe a Federal Agency was involved and wanted to be on point...? The article needed to reference COVID or Lozano ...then there would be 5000 reads and 10k posts!

Jun 08, 2022 02:20 PMDuke - Almost 5,000 reads and you're only the second person to comment. I'll guess cops are on this site and they chose not to comment for whatever reason. My question is why did SBPD have to wait for Santa Maria (SMPD) cops to arrive in order for SMPD to make this arrest? I'll presume the area was secured by SBPD. No mention in the article of how but local cops know how to handle this. I'm just guessing it's best to make contact while the scene is "quiet," as you state. Never know what can happen at a "quiet" location with a murder suspect in a short period of time. How does it make sense to wait one hour +- for SMPD to arrive and take over as primary entity to arrest a murder suspect? Why transport an entire SMPD swat team to SB? As you know we're not talking about a petty crime. I would have expected once SBPD received the information, they form up, go to the location and take him into custody, await the arrival of SMPD and release him to them. Aside from this, I don't believe SM cops have jurisdiction in SB. I'm open an explanation as to why SMPD had to make this arrest, what do you believe are some of the "plausible explanations?"

Jun 06, 2022 04:57 PMWhat am I missing in this article or is there a problem with my computer? After almost forty-eight hours since this SBPD/SMPD article was posted and 4500 views later, it appears I am the only person to comment? Does anyone have an explanation?

Jun 05, 2022 11:08 AMWhat was the authority for Santa Maria police officers to be the "primary entity" in arresting a murder suspect in Santa Barbara? Why wait? Once the location of this murder suspect was known why didn't SB cops take immediate steps to take the suspect into custody?
