Hang Glider Crash Lands at Mission Rose Garden
By an edhat reader
We were picnicking at the Mission Rose Garden this afternoon [Saturday] when a hang glider hit a tree and landed near the roses. Appeared to be ok but I can't confirm. Wild to see it. I don't have a pic but someone must.

Jun 17, 2022 12:45 AMI truly don't understand why one would paraglide instead of hang glide.
RIP

Jun 15, 2022 07:54 PMI went to Wilcox cliff when I was learning back in 1978 and saw Dave Saffold do the most amazing thing with some of the other SB locals HG pilots. Beautiful day. About 20-22 straight in. They were boating along the cliff in a big Wills Wing, I think. Nobody hooked in. They were riding the bar. One guy would fly it for a while, then ease into the cliff and park, still flying. One buy would step off the bar exactly as another stepped on. He'd fly for a while then they'd change again. I couldn't believe it. I'd only done a handful of cliff launches by the book.

Jun 13, 2022 08:55 AMI'm old enough to remember when one of the Saffold brothers sort of crashed when the sport was brand new in town, I'd guess back in the 70's in the early days of the sport here.
That said, it was ages ago and back when the jump off was off a point much much lower on Gibraltar than it is now. Paragliders do seem to get themselves into trouble more frequently, particularly the people who are new to the sport and visiting the area. SB is a prime destination visit for both hang gliders and paragliders.

Jun 12, 2022 06:24 PMWhere is there to take off near there? I'm used to seeing these by the beach/bluffs.

Jun 12, 2022 06:34 PMGibraltar Rd is one launch place. Elings Park and Wilcox Property are other take-off sites. TIL no license required in CA to fly a paraglider or hand glider. Both are considered "self-regulated" sports.

Jun 14, 2022 11:20 AMA hang glider has a rigid frame and looks more like an aircraft. A paraglider is not rigid and is more like flying under a shaped parachute.
I wanted to post pics, but was unable to do so unfortunately to show the difference.

Jun 13, 2022 10:31 AM@8:45AM - Technically I have no idea, ask me what the difference between a "Track bike" & a "Fixie", I could go on and on... BUT when I went to the "Top secret" web site: https://www.google.com/
that's the "s" is for? it seems that Hang Gliders require a great deal more "Skill" & training the the Paragliders. Apparently the paragliders are capable of greater speeds yet seem to be safer?
https://flycapetown.co.za/blog/differences-paragliding-hang-gliding
sorry if I didn't provide enough info, as I said ask a bicycle question I could answer without looking it up.
As for the 9:01PM post I made yesterday, I just couldn't pass up Mr. Saffold's comment.

Jun 12, 2022 09:01 PMthanks, YR. I'd clicked on the link "Hang Glider twitter", it appears there's some issues between the HG group & the PG's as seen here:

@teesizzle123
That is not a hang glider that is a paraglider. The hang glider pilots in this town are tired of taking the rap for paragliders crashing all over the city.

Jun 12, 2022 02:07 PMThe person taking the photo was hosting a memorial. Pretty creative way to crash the party. (I hope the glider guy/gal only has a bruised ego.)
