The busiest man in R&B plays new music with a full band from ‘Christmas with PJ Morton’ (November 9th via Morton Records), his first holiday album. This performance is part of the GRAMMY-nominated keyboardist’s winter US tour, which follows Maroon 5’s arena tour, sold-out solo dates throughout Asia and Europe and appearances on The Tonight Show and NPR’s Tiny Desk. There’s no repeating the magic Mariah Carey created with her bopping holiday classic “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” so PJ Morton didn’t even try. Instead, he made the iconic pop hit all his own, with some soulful flair.

Morton — best known for playing keyboard in Maroon 5 — slowed down Carey’s lively original by adding a groovy synthesizer and a thumping drum beat, both of which highlight his smooth tone. And with Mint Condition’s Stokley Williams providing some suave vocals as well, Morton practically makes listeners believe that “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has been this funky all along.

The rendition is one of the eight tracks Morton will be featuring on his forthcoming holiday album, Christmas With PJ Morton, due Nov. 9 on Morton Records. While Mariah’s signature Christmas tune is one of PJ’s favorites, the entire LP is a project that’s close to his heart.

“Christmas and Christmas music was such a big part of my childhood growing up. My whole family is musical — I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas album and now I’ve finally done it,” Morton exclaims. “I felt like a really soulful Christmas album was missing. Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ captured the feeling of the classics. I knew I wanted to flip it to my style, and while recording it I kept hearing Stokley’s voice on it. I grew up a fan of Mint Condition and I knew he’d be perfect on it. Couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.”

Morton just wrapped Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues Tour on Oct. 15, but next month he’ll be hitting the road again on his own for the More Gumbo Tour, which will hit 19 cities across North America from Nov. 11 through Dec. 7. And though the tour is named after his most recent album, Gumbo, Morton will likely be spreading some Christmas cheer as he goes from city to city: “All Christmas songs are fair game!”
