Martin Luther King Jr Weekend of Remembrance

Friday, January 17 at noon, the weekend will open at the Eternal Flame on the lawn in front of Buchanan Hall UCSB campus. “Walk with Us” to North Hall; Reception, Multi-Cultural Center.

6pm -7:30, Worship Service with Congregation B’nai B’rith. Red Sea Rhythm Rockers choir, music and poetry; come together in fellowship. 1000 San Antonio Rd., Santa Barbara, California 93111.

On Saturday come to Santa Barbara City College between 11am and 2pm and walk across the bridge from the main to the west campus to honor and experience the Selma to Montgomery March Dr. King led.  

Traditions of Sunday worship remain and the MLK Jr. Committee encourages all to attend a service honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. A list of services where you can attend are on our website : www.MLKSB.org. 

On Monday, January 20, the national holiday to honor Dr. King that was established in 1986, the Santa Barbara downtown will come alive. Kicking off at 9 am in de la Guerra Plaza with a diverse program of elected officials, speakers, and music; followed at 10 am by the March from the Plaza up State Street to the Arlington Theatre, 1317 State St. for the emotionally packed program of song and dance, with awards for youth Essays and Poetry and Keynote Speaker Rev. James Lawson. Dr. Lawson, who worked with Dr. King in the turbulent times of the 1950s and 60s, will put the day, the man and the movement into his perspective. Rev. Lawson helped shaped the movement for civil rights.  He will deliver an eloquent closing speech for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Remembrance. Come hear from a man who witnessed first-hand the birth of a movement.

This program on Monday is the culmination of the weekend of events honoring Dr. King’s legacy. We hope you’ll come join us.
