Does anyone know what was going on around 6:30 p.m. Thursday night, the train was stopped on the tracks right around Mission Street exit, and SB traffic was slow with lots of firetrucks and police on the freeway.

The train blows it's whistle all the way through Carpinteria (I like hearing it) because of deaths. There have been a few suicides over the years, and just stupid accidents of people chasing their dogs down the tracks (frightened by the train). One drunk 18 year old was playing "chicken" with the train, jumping back and forth across the tracks in front of the oncoming train.

A few years ago, a guy was killed there by a rodent. He was walking down the train tracks and didn't hear the weasel.

Mission is the stopping point for the end of double track for the Santa Barbara block where they go in the hole to meet or be passed by priority traffic. You didn't say if it was UP or ATK, but either way there was a suicide by train down south that played havoc with everything on the Coast Route. Nothing posted on ATK train tracker or Train Orders of any other event so likely trying to let No 14, the Coast Starlight make up some time to Seattle and just coincidental as 8:18 AM said. Last I heard 14 was 12 hours late just getting to Dunsmuir. Don't know when it finally got to Seattle.

It was amtrak - surfliner passenger train. Sounds like it was a coincidence, just never saw that before and with all the fire/police I figured something happened,

How much does Union Pacific lose every year due to vagrants blocking train traffic when going through this part of California. How many locals have to lose sleep due to Union Pacific being forced to blast their whistles from one end of the city limits to the next due to vagrants on the tracks?

They're required to blow them at every street crossing, vagrants or not.

There could have been sometime one the tracks tree, grocery cart, or a warning of something up ahead a car stuck on the tracks,

Maybe the stopped train was just a coincidence with some SB accident then? There's been nothing on it anywhere.

Thanks for your reporting Roger. I appreciate hearing about all that's going on about town and beyond.

I cannot remember the exact time but there was an accident on the S.B. Side and the NB Side I don't post all accidents anymore because there are so many. Near this area there were two injuries not so much injuries "People that wanted to get checked out." is what I heard...There were several accidents at the same time in other locations around town as well. I heard chatter on the Amtrak freq. but nothing involving an emergency..

I never heard a thing must have been eating dinner or something...Vehicle accidents heard plenty of those.

That is the exact time the Freeway was backing up Southbound. I saw lots of emergency lights but never saw the cause of it all.

Yes, the SB side was at a crawl with about 2-3 fire trucks and police, and the train was stopped on the tracks (I was passing the NB Mission St exit).
