The City of Santa Barbara would like to remind the community that throwing and leaving confetti, sequins, and glitter on the ground is littering.

The use of confetti at Santa Barbara parades and festivals is growing, in both the number of events where confetti is used and the volume of confetti tossed.

While confetti eggs or cascarones have long been a tradition at Santa Barbara’s Old Spanish Days, we are now seeing large bags of confetti being dumped on our sidewalks, streets, and parks during Summer Solstice, Fourth of July, Fiesta, and Holiday parades and celebrations.

In addition to paper confetti, the volume of shiny metallic confetti, sequins, and glitter is increasing. These are all made of plastic and are often mistaken for food and consumed by birds and other animals. Confetti can easily wash or blow into our storm drains, creeks, and ocean, where it poses a threat to aquatic life.

Event organizers, Downtown Santa Barbara, and City staff all work in concert to clean up after community events, but confetti is particularly difficult to pick up. Even following extensive sweeping and vacuuming of our sidewalks and streets, confetti remains trapped in concrete and asphalt, between bricks and pavers, in planters and parkways, and in the grass in our parks.

While you’re celebrating in Santa Barbara, we encourage you to choose paper confetti and use it sparingly!

I think the cascaroni makers need to be warned about using anything but paper confetti. Confiscate anything else. They will get the picture for next year.

FLICKA. You're a local. "Cascarones," not cascaroni. (Maybe you're hungry for mac and cheese?)

Yes - let's create a local government agency to regulate and enforce.

The ONLY laws the cops care about is the DUIs. That is where the big money comes from. They dont' care to enforce the little stuff. Fiesta is like a free-for-all for them!

Two of my favorites are smokers that also leave their butts on the street, and the 'children in cars' that speed down Haley and Gutierrez where the speed limit is 25. Both would be sooooo easy to enforce, but nooooooooo...

How do you know the people selling in the carts are immigrants?

...**selectively** not enforced.

True, true. We have so many laws that are not enforced.
