Finally, Goleta finished the park in Old Town Goleta! It's been in the works since 2011. It's called Jonny Wallis Park after one of the founders of the City of Goleta, and an Old Town resident.

And guess what, it has a little skate park! A lot of folks spent a lot of time convincing the city we need a skate park, and they listened. The park is brand new, so everything is fresh and clean, and it's getting a lot of use, all day, every day.

It's got a full basketball court.

Pickle Ball...

A couple of ping pong tables...

Picnic areas with bbqs...

A brand new bike path that runs along the San Jose Creek and will eventually go under the freeway to Calle Real!

And last but not least, a skate park.

We asked our favorite pro skater, Micaiah Furukawa, wat he thought of the new skate park. Being a Goleta boy, he was super stoked, and he sent us a few photos and his thoughts.

Micaiah gave it one thumb up and one thumb down. "For the size it is, it's good. I'm super appreciative and happy that we have a skatepark." It was well planned and the elements are placed. But, there are way too many people in Goleta that will be wanting to use it, so it will likely just be too crowded a lot of the time. And a crowded skatepark can be hazardous. Hopefully, there are more being planned for Goleta...

He and fellow Powell Peralta skater Dave Dixon put the little park through the paces.

Of course you don't have to skate like these guys to enjoy it...

Skaters of all ages and abilities can enjoy it, and every time we go by there are lots of guys doing just that!

So congratulations to the City of Goleta for getting it done and giving the people what they want! Go check it out...

Thanks for the terrific pictures Tom. Goleta did itself proud. That looks like and amazing park for kids and adults.

No phone gazing. Relaxing. I was there for almost an hour, and didn't seen anyone distracted by phones.

Did you notice how all of the skaters pictured are complying with the regulation that all skaters "wear a helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads? " The City certainly can't afford a lawsuit over a serious injury, can it?

State passed a law a while back saying that Cities can't be sued for skate park injuries, otherwise no one would build them. At least a few kids have helmets on, even though those helmets are not enough to protect them from a sharp corner injury. Only motorcycle helmets can do that, and you can't wear one of those heavy things while skating or biking or scootering.

Hey, dude. Life's a bitch when you're old and testosterone has exited stage left. Helmets and pads are, like, way uncool.

Wonderful park and wonderful pictures of it! Hopefully, there will be space in the skatepark for girls to skate as well as guys! The park's namesake, Jonny D. Wallis, would be proud; she cared a lot about Goleta and parks and boys and girls. Thanks to the city for making such an attractive place.

I have been there several times and almost every time I have seen at least one girl skating. Not including my daughter who is now learning.

The "little" skate park was originally intended for kids in the neighborhood.

I just finished rewatching "Lords of Dogtown." If you're interested in the history of skateboarding in CA, I recommend seeing the film. Powell Peralta's story is there. One disappointment is that Sims skateboards is barely acknowledged. And Heath Ledger (a longtime favorite actor of mine) gives, I think, a shockingly over-the-top poor performance.

Last photo, 3 basketball hoops on one pole (yellow top). We watched a little boy (2ish) play ball, and lose his balance, but continue, and continue, playing the lower hoop. Nobody was around to compete with him. He LOVED it. We left, but he never stopped, nor did his numerous falls stop his enthusiasm...he might still be there for all I know.

A very happy place. Well thought out. Out door recreation for families. Great job Goleta. Nice to see such a well used public park again.
