Today, Target is announcing plans to expand its reach to guests in Santa Barbara with a new, approximately 117,000-square-foot store in Goleta planned to open in 2019. The store will be located at 6865 Hollister Ave., at the intersection of Storke Road and will feature Target’s next generation store design. It will be Target’s second store in the area, joining the planned Santa Barbara Galleria small-format store.

“With the positive response following the plans we shared for our Santa Barbara Galleria store, we are excited to find another opportunity to grow our presence in the Santa Barbara community. The Goleta store will feature our latest store design, giving guests a modern, convenient location to stock up on fresh groceries, everyday essentials, home goods and more,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target.

Target has signed a lease with Merlone Geier Partners for the Goleta store. It will offer a product assortment that guests expect from Target, including apparel and accessories, kids’ and baby care products, toys and sporting goods, fresh grocery, home décor and furniture, health and beauty and other departments.

This store will also offer Order Pickup, giving guests even more convenience and added security with the ability to buy online and pick up in store. More than 95 percent of Order Pickup orders are ready in less than an hour for guests at their local Target store.

The Goleta store will employ more than 200 team members. Target is an employer that values the individuals who come together as a team to serve guests in the community and provides team members with opportunities to build and develop skills for their careers. Target offers market competitive wages to its team members in cities across the country and recently increased its minimum hourly wage. This investment in the team will allow Target to continue to recruit and retain strong team members and provide an elevated experience for its guests and in the communities it serves.

“We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Target and welcome a Target store to the City of Goleta. Bringing a well-loved brand with a terrific shopping experience will be great addition to the Goleta community,” said Will Tipton, managing director, Merlone Geier Partners.

Goleta might have a Jeannine's Restaurant and Bakery soon, at the Hollister Village Shopping Center. Good option for tasty and healthy breakfast!

Wow ! so I see both good and bad. Kmart actually provided one of the few options for people on limited incomes with pretty good quality and prices. Sear (owned by Kmart) doesn’t carry much of Kmart did so there will be a severe gap for those people waiting for Target of a year or more? Plus from my experiences at Target they have good prices but slightly higher than Kmart. Honestly I wish they had picked a different location. One other concern I have is for the stores in that lot like Cajun Kitchen, Designer Cuts and Subway being forced out which will really hit me worse than Kmart leaving and Target coming in.

Wait no I need the indo China market! I love them and there’s nowhere else to get such a good selection of European snacks and other foreign foods

They want to “revitalize” that whole section of shops..can Cajun, subway, designer cuts survive major rent increases due to “revitalization”? Probably not. Sigh.

EDNSB - where did you hear that Cajun Kitchen and other businesses are going to be forced out? Are they? That would suck!

Target is made for people who want a good deal, no matter if they keep horses, have rentals, etc. I only shop at thrift stores and yard sales where deals are even better, designer duds for less than pennies on the dollar, and if you are patient you'll eventually find anything you might need, or think you do. Years ago we wanted a better fireplace screen, it took a year but we got one for $1.25 at the Salvation Army. Actually, I don't need much as I have a closet full and well stocked household items, mostly don't bother with shopping for anything but food these days.

Target/Kmart/etc are primarily meant for regular folks...you know, people who do not look down at people who want to stretch their dollars...folks who cannot afford to keep horses as pets...folks who struggle financially...folks who do not have money coming in from one or more rental properties...folks who did not inherit a bunch of dough...folks who shop thrift stores....folks who feel lucky to just get by and somehow that makes life just fine.

I'll be curious to see how much new congestion comes to pass. By that I mean: How many more daily shoppers will flock to Target as opposed to the number that went to K-Mart when it was enjoying its heyday (or even now)? Granted each store caters to a slightly different demographic, but not much different. Excess congestion may be less than expected. We'll see...

A blessing and a curse. The traffic at Storke & Hollister is our area's version of the 101 & 405. The back ups will be epic. It's ground zero where I work, so perhaps it will be time to ditch the car and start riding my bike...

Great news ! Thank you Goleta. Target is also open late so hopefully folks can find a less congested time to shop. I'm looking forward to not having to drive to Ventura for a Target run. Won't be going to the one at La Cumbre.

ASOLIS, oh, maybe ask some of the store owners why they have left downtown. That's a good start. It's not all about rent.

While your comment is hilarious, Goleta has more pending pot shops than Santa Barbara does they just haven’t released the names and dates in the paper yet, it’s coming though. Other than the pot comment your absolutely correct.

SB used to be a town for wealthy retirees whose personal philanthropy gave the community its unique visual cultural heritage. Those days are gone now too.

There is definitely an increasing difference in philosophy between the two towns. Santa Barbara has been a tourist destination for years and seeks to be more so. It has also adopted a very progressive attitude regarding homelessness and crime resulting in chasing away the locals and now many tourists. Goleta has a philosophy of catering to small (and large) business and the people who work in them. Those looking for excitement may enjoy Santa Barbara. For those of us who prefer to not appear on the 6:00 news, Goleta tends to be a more attractive place. I'm sure the pending pot shops will separate the towns even further.

BOSCO, sorry but the tilt in favor of Goleta is the issue of safety. I feel much safer in Goleta. I would love to shop and eat on State Street, but my risk vs. reward evaluation stops me from doing that, and has for about 3 years.

Santa Barbara's infatuation with AUD creates a high density congestion of people with low disposable income. They can hang out on street corners but don't have the money to buy much. So shops close but the residents stay behind (now with even less disposable income).

Freedom from street crazies, distracted drivers, skateboard thugs and aggressive panhandlers. That is why people left downtown Santa Barbara.

Time Santa Barbara to finally stop destroying itself to provide housing for Goleta workers. Live in Goleta folks, we have no duty to provide you "affordable" housing in our city midst.

Whoops!...we agree with MM1970 ....but our intent was to support the comment made by BOSCO...” What’s up with the S.B. V.S. Goleta attitude?” I like aspects of Summerland, Carpinteria and Ventura too!

I don't understand this comment. I live in SB and work in Goleta. Traffic wise (that pesky commute!) there are far more people driving from Goleta to SB in the morning than vice versa. The traffic is usually worse going south in the am and north in the pm.

One the most congested, if not the most congested, intersections in the area! The gas station on the corner, which already has some of the most expensive gas in the county, is going to love having more cars drive by each day.

Happy to hear the new Target will have a grocery store. Good competition and very convenient for locals. And there will be parking!

And where did the City have the space to put in a huge retail building with parking? Nowhere. The Storke and Carneros Rd intersections are already slammed with traffic, wait until there is a Target in the area to draw even more people. I already try to avoid that area and this will just make it less desirable as a destination.

The city always finds all the space in the world to build housing for those who cannot afford to live here...or anywhere else for that matter. Trends show that those who cannot support themselves vore a certain way.

This really makes it look like SB leadership is failing and flailing. The Goleta economy is going full steam a head...Santa Barbara is going for steamers on the sidewalk and weekly white-guilt protests! Who would have thought Goleta would be the place businesses want to set up shop, create jobs, and establish a sense of community. Santa Barbara is looking sad....just walk downtown to see a crusty stinking hell hole.....or simply visit one of our lovely parks.

What's with the SB vs. Goleta attitude? You do realize that SB and Goleta are next to each other right? Goleta has the industry growth, university, and big box shopping. SB has the posh shops, restaurants, hotels and entertainment. We're all one community, aren't we? I see that as a good balance.

Oh, please. Stop with the crusty stinking hell hole hyperbole. You're just scaring away more shoppers. Santa Barbara's downtown is safe and still full of lots of nice shops. I see happy tourists every day. Hang out in and around La Arcada.

That's just what's needed; more high density housing that sucks the water to oblivion. A Target store won't use any more water than what was previously being utilized at the old K-Mart at least.

The City of SB blew it. They could have steered Target to City-owned land adjacent to the airport. Could have received all of the sales tax revenue and none of the negative impacts for traffic, etc.. Good for Goleta scoring this win. But jeez, the Storke/Hollister intersection will be a nightmare on weekends.

Yes, getting from the east side of the Storke/Hollister interchange to the left side (and back) is the problem. It doesn't matter why you want to do it. I work off of Los Carneros. Getting to Costco, or S&F, and then back is terrible. Getting on the freeway going south? (From S&F or Costco). Yuck. If you work on south Storke, or live in that area and want to get on the freeway - gridlock.

MTD's diesels aren't too bad - catalytic converters and diesel-particulate traps. They do need to be hauling enough people to avoid three or four cars on the road to show a net emissions savings. The electrics and hybrids run the toughest routes - worst stop and go. Most of the diesels supplement them at rush times. You can bet that most bus riders don't have a choice of bus or Prius though.

Whoever keeps writing about the nightmare at Storke and Hollister doesn't live in Goleta, but might be going to Costco. Those of us who live in the University neighborhood surrounding the Camino Real Marketplace manage to get where we are going simply by avoiding the strip in front of the turnoff into Costco . Goleta remains a fine City to work, play and reside in, and for most of us is more affordable than SB, including the shopping, which tends to favor lower prices and middle class priorities. Target will be popular here for those reasons.

I'm curious about just how green? The Santa Barbara MTD web site lists equipment consisting of 77 diesel, 14 electric and 18 hybrid vehicles of various configurations. How polluting are the diesel buses with very low ridership as they drive stop-and-go along their routes? Not trying to start a war here, but would really like to know.

The city should have taken the opportunity demo this eyesore & to turn this property into low-income housing instead it opted for tax dollars & more congestion
