The Santa Barbara Unified School District (SBUSD) is considering cuts to the music programs at La Colina, SBJHS, SBHS & San Marcos. GV and DP would likely be next.

Please consider attending the next SB Unified School Board meeting on Tuesday, May 22 at 6:30pm in the  Board Room of the SBUSD Administration Office, 720 Santa Barbara Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101 to learn more.

What is the budget problem? Excellent question PITMIX. I see no other local news source alerting the SBUSD Community to these dire cuts. I am advocating for more accessible transparency.

People need to wake up. We've been fleeced by the public employee unions who continue to steal from you and your kids. Ask why there is more money than ever yet they keep needing to shutter programs, classes and add more and more taxes and bonds. Ask them where the money went and why we need to have such a bloated administration filled with people making 250k a year and retiring with an equivalency of $3m in the bank. The answer is that the administration and the public teachers employee unions have stolen the money for themselves.

Teachers don't get very much per year, and their pensions are not that lucrative given that they don't get social security. I agree that the growth in Admin staff looks bad but I think that is driven by all of the state and federal regulatory requirements. If we had a real newspaper in town it would be very interesting for them to look into the increase in admin staff and explain why they are necessary. Same with UCSB admin.

Argggh. I feel like in the last 6 years, we've made strides at the elementary level from having to raise money in the PTA to pay for PE, art, and music...to now when finally we have the district paying for PE, art and music. Now the district is going to cut it again??

Just show up at the meeting and voice your support for music in the schools! Arts are important, they enrich human existence, they certainly enrich the lives of kids in school, kids in music classes learn to play together, to listen to each other, to work hard, that practice is necessary to master any skill. It's a crime to cut these programs, to think of them as extraneous to education.

Concur Simplynotmyaddress. Music education has proven to be so enriching for our young people on a myriad of levels. So disheartened to hear public education is devolving as I write. Too many over paid and redundant administrators and not enough Music for our young.

Look what happened when Drivers Education was cut from the schools.... Drivers don't know the rules of the road, more accidents than ever.....etc... Los Angeles was talking about reinstating the Drivers Education back into the schools. Cutting the music program, is a terrible idea. I would bet that the stats out there, would say, that kids that know music, stay out of trouble.... Get some volunteers to run the schools. Lot's of retired people that would be more than qualified to run the schools
