50 Years of Santa Barbara and Puerto Vallarta Sister Committees

Congrats on 50 years of great relations with our sister cities! I think it is a great program for the most part. I, like many others, was sad when Dingle was dropped from the program due to a mix up by our local poets who showed up on the wrong night and at the wrong bar. Dingle has about 20 pubs (it's probably less than twenty....but anyone who has been there knows that teenie-tiny Dingle has a L-O-T of pubs). One thing to note when you go to a place like Dingle, and that is to not expect free drinks from the pub just because you read some poetry. However, patrons in Irish pubs who appreciate any performance, whether it be poetry, music, or dancing will buy you drinks (usually beer)...but do NOT expect them to do this. Just let it happen naturally, and if it does not, buy your own and enjoy the moment.

50 Years of Santa Barbara and Puerto Vallarta Sister Committees

Fifty years ago, through the efforts of visionaries including Richard Hildago, Michael Lemus, Gil & Marti Garcia who saw children suffering from polio in Puerto Vallarta, a Sister Cities committee was formed which recruited donations from generous Santa Barbarians & PV citizens, to build a Rehabilitation Clinic. This clinic was designed by CalPoly SLO architectural students who stayed in PV to learn construction - a win-win. . As polio has subsided in PV, the clinic functions now as a cancer rehabilitation and treatment center. That was the first Sister City collaborative project. SB/PV Sister Cities now support families with children who have cancer along with Santa Barbara & Puerto Vallarta Rotary Clubs. Over the years SB/PV collaborations brought: barometric chamber for PV divers, ambulance, school bus, school supplies and raised funds for a community center/school in Volcanes outside PV. A vocational school to teach commercial sewing is another recent collaborative project. Forgive the dignatarios pictured for taking a victory lap with an honorary dinner. This is not just a promotional tourist trip. These are SB people helping PV people. Of course we have fun in Puerto Vallarta too! Good works are worth celebrating!

Are those grumpy poets still involved in the committee? If not they should "retire" and allow more level-headed members to make amends to a great town. The people of Dingle are beyond generous and kind, we need to repair our snobbish reputation.

Then apply with all "the people who have spoken." If you have the minimum number of people who want this on both sides (here and Dingle, Ireland) then submit the application. From what I understand one reason it was dissolved was that neither side had the required minimum number of members for years. But nothing is stopping anyone from doing the work to meet the sister city requirements and reapply.
