When hundreds of guns are exchanged for $100 Smart & Final gift cards at Earl Warren Showgrounds on Aug. 21, homes and neighborhoods throughout the Central Coast will become safer.

Elected officials, law enforcement, and community leaders gathered at Santa Barbara City Hall on July 30 to encourage participation in the Coalition Against Gun Violence’s 6th Anonymous Gun Buyback and to spread awareness about the tragic impacts of gun violence in our communities. The five previous Anonymous Gun Buybacks have resulted in the voluntary exchange of nearly 1,200 weapons.

Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo and Police Chief Barney Melekian cited a January 2021 murder in Santa Barbara as a disheartening example illustrating the importance of removing guns from circulation. Murrillo pointed out that exchanging a gun on Aug. 21 could save the life of a depressed member of a household or prevent an accidental shooting. City of Santa Barbara is sponsoring the Gun Buyback and SBPD officers will safely handle the weapons.

First District Supervisor Das Williams said that a gun in a household is 22 times more likely to be used on someone living in the home than in defending the home, and if a family decides a gun doesn’t belong in their home, it needs to be disposed of properly. “These guns often find their way, through burglaries or other methods, to the street,” Williams said. “Guns that are used in the commission of a crime often start out as legal guns.”

District Attorney Joyce Dudley, State Senator Monique Limon and Erica Reyes of Congressperson Salud Carbajal’s Office all spoke to draw attention to the need to reduce the number of guns in circulation. Carbajal supports tighter gun restrictions and background checks at the federal level, Reyes said.

ABOUT THE 6th ANONYMOUS GUN BUYBACK:

The Coalition Against Gun Violence, the City of Santa Barbara and the Santa Barbara Police Department are sponsoring our 6th Anonymous Gun Buyback at Earl Warren Showgrounds on Saturday, August 21, 2021 from 8 am to noon. Donors will receive a $100 Smart & Final Gift Card for each handgun or rifle and $200 for an assault weapon. Attendees should place unloaded firearms in their trunk before entering the Gun Buyback. Police officers safely remove the firearms and provide and tally the number of gift cards each vehicle receives.

A great time for anti gunners to walk the talk with their pocket book. Visit a local firearm store, legally purchase a firearm and then turn it in to the buy back program. As stated in the article. many legal guns make it to the illegal side. Do your part and then share your success story.

Agreed goaty, and I don’t think it even has to work. An enterprising person could probably construct something that would be legally classified as a firearm for well under $100 and make a little profit on this program, although gift cards are a pain to use. On a more serious note, I would strongly encourage anyone who has a gun they want to get rid of to visit one of our local gun stores. You can likely get a lot more than $100, perhaps more than $1000, and someone else can enjoy the weapon for many years to come.

This is classic ritual. The amount of guns turned in is so small compared to the millions that are out in our nation that it is not even calculable that such events will change anything. The guns turned in are also highly unlikely to ever enter into the dark side. We need a real system of taking auto fire weapons and high capacity weapons and uber powerful weapons off the streets. So long as the Supreme Court is in the thrall of the gun lobby this need will not be met.

Would you please provide your readers with some information? Some articles, some videos?
I'm aware of the French protests, but not of Australia.
I'd like more information about first responders and health care workers refusing the vaccine.
I'm well aware of that hospital where hundreds were fired. Houston TX. About 150 workers.
This ought to upset you: "Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest nonprofit health care organization, announced Monday that it will make COVID-19 vaccination mandatory for all its employees, including physicians."

Australia

Protests have died down because they sent in the Army and threatened to arrest everyone.

Health Care workers and first responders

The first article linked doesn't have a direct link to what % are not vaccinated. Two charts near the end give you an idea. One chart shows infection rates. You will see the first reponders mimic public at large. ie: the healthcare workers and first responders are vaccinated at the same rate as the rest of the LA area.

There is a table at the end that cover the last week in July 2021. You will see that among first responders and healthcare workers, new cases are spread equally amongst the vaxxed and unvaxxed (203 vs 202) That shows out of 405 cases, 1/2 were unvaccinated.

Actually many CA counties are mandating vaccinations although the unions will have the last say on it.
LA county is telling all Superior court personnel to get vaccinated or get fired. I guess if you agree to take a check from the state, you are obligated to follow the state rule

Interesting Mayor shows up for a photo shoot, but is always too busy to participate in any candidate debate or one on interview, nor has provided specific details of policy goals and plans
The mayor has intrinsic influence on choosing high level long term high level positions, which can be life long and permanent,(like city management )which could last decades.

There are a lot to fill with the exodus that have occurred during her tenure

Another do-as-I-say-event: 15 people in close quarters on the city hall steps; 10 were wearing masks, including the mayor; the others, maskless, included Das Williams who has demanded from the BOS dias that we all be masked and the wanna-be-mayor, Deb Schwartz.
