Detectives investigating the 1996 disappearance of Kristin Smart believe her body was recently moved from the home of the prime suspect's father.

In a San Luis Obispo County probation report, a detective stated they are in possession of biological evidence that makes them believe Smart was buried underneath Ruben Flores' deck at one time and there's damning evidence that a body had been buried in that location and then recently moved, reports the San Luis Obispo Tribune.

Ruben Flores, 80, is the father of prime suspect Paul Flores, 44, who has been charged with Smart's murder and was the last seen with Smart before she disappeared. Ruben Flores has been charged as an accessory to murder for helping his son cover up the murder and dispose of Smart's body.

The SLO Tribune uncovered court documents that were filed Monday where prosecutors stated there are dozens of women who have recounted Paul Flores' sexual assaults and predatory behavior that "document his 25 years as a serial rapist."

Ruben and Paul Flores have both pled not guilty.

Paul Flores has been denied bail but Ruben Flores' bail was reduced from $250,000 to $50,000 as the judge deemed he is not a flight risk or a risk to public safety.

If convicted, Paul Flores faces a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. Ruben Flores faces a maximum sentence of three years in prison if convicted. Both are scheduled for hearings on May 17 and June 21.

CUR: You make my case. Although I was primarily thinking about the people who wish violent animal-like assaults on the incarcerated.

Do you know how much it costs to enforce the death penalty? Millions in court costs over dozens of years for mandatory appeals, during which the birds will sing, etc, etc, etc.

Imagine living the rest of your life in your bathroom. The death penalty lets the perp off the hook.

SHOREBIRD - Among the tenets of justice are fairness and equality. Thus, incarceration is not fair weighed against the heinous taking of life. Death penalty is the only fair measure of justice in this case if Flores is guilty.

Why death? Because if incarcerated Flores will still be able to enjoy hearing the birds sing, listen to music, exercise in the yard, daydream in his head, study in the library, watch tv, etc., etc., etc. and so on.

Kristen Smart is unable to do any of those things.

Thus, if only incarcerated, justice will not have been fully served.

This is nothing but a pair of sick (fill in the blank in plural here). The death penalty is too good for them. Try them & w/ the evidence convict them, sentence them to prison & put them in general population. The problem would most likely "fix" itself during that time.

This family has been under intense scrutiny since the disappearance of Ms. Smart. Wasn’t the property thoroughly searched after her disappearance? It defies any type of logic that the body would have been hidden under the porch and moved “recently”. They’ve had decades to find a burial site far, far away. I guess we’ll need to wait until the evidence is presented, but if they kept her body on their property all this time they are the stupidest murderers on the planet.

I'm not a parent, but is it really unusual for a father to help a son dispose of a body that he has just killed, or would that be pretty common? I think most people would be against that, and if they did it, the guilt would eat them up afterward. But maybe am underestimating how much parents are willing to do for their kid.

Sounds like a strong case, and I am sure they will be squeezing Paul Flores to give up the location of the remains in exchange for not pursuing the death penalty. Seems like they also could add charges on the father, which might be part of the negotiation.

Can we all agree that if we use torture, then it is acceptable for the US's enemies to torture US soldiers or citizens that they have captured? One of the many arguments against giving in to our baser instincts.

Torture does not yield accurate information. Unfortunately, despite what you may have heard or seen, there is a lot of research to back this up. Torture also is a very poor choice as a warfare strategy. It seriously damages those who use it, their families, and their communities, as well as those who are tortured. Torture harms everyone, not just the intended victim.

Agreed. Super shocking. How on earth can someone can hide a body, let the family of the murdered girl suffer for 25 YEARS, and only receive 3 years in prison? Both father and son should rot behind bars for the rest of their lives.
