An uncommon coalition of healthcare and education partners from across the county is joining forces to launch MASKED AND MIGHTY, a campaign to save lives, reduce the transmission of COVID-19, reopen more businesses and schools and maintain access to vital healthcare.

“We want to reach our communities with a positive, non-political message that will engage all parts of our county to work together on stopping COVID-19 in its tracks,” said Dr. Peggy Dodds, Deputy Health Officer, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department and retired pediatrician. “In addition to avoiding gatherings with people outside of your household, residents should practice good hygiene and observe physical distancing of at least six feet.”

Geared for audiences of all ages and translated into English and Spanish, the MASKED AND MIGHTY campaign uses local imagery and people to engage all communities with messages about the importance of MASKS, and the MIGHTY powers that physical distancing, good hygiene and other preventions can have to prevent community spread of the virus.

Components of the MASKED AND MIGHTY campaign include:

  • Website in English at and Spanish at

  • Media Outreach includes county-wide print, radio and digital outlets. Businesses can join the campaign by requesting a poster to display in their windows. Email [email protected] to request a poster.

  • Lighting Display to “POWER UP SANTA BARBARA COUNTY.” From October 27 to November 7, partners will come together to power up landmark buildings across the county with bright, multi-colored lights to demonstrate commitment to adhering to safety precautions to reduce transmission of COVID-19. The lighting display is a fun, safe alternative to Halloween trick-or-treating. Any business or resident can participate or share images on social media with the hashtag #maskedandmighty. The MASKED AND MIGHTY website lists some stores that stock colored light bulbs.

  • Community Video Project to create a series of short videos in English and Spanish to encourage residents to follow safety guidelines to reduce the infection rate. Members of the public are encouraged to create and share their own messages about why they are MASKED AND MIGHTY. The website includes examples and tips to help the public create their own message. The Santa Barbara County Promotores Network is engaging the Spanish and Mixtec speaking communities.

  • County Board of Supervisors Resolution recognizing the “MASKED AND MIGHTY” countywide approach to improving health and the economy.

  • Discussion Guide for Teachers to lead conversations with students about the best ways to protect against COVID-19. The guide is available on the MASKED AND MIGHTY website.

  • Coloring Pages for artists of all ages to share their artwork on the campaign’s social media accounts.

  • Social Media Facebook (Masked and Mighty Coalition), Instagram (Masked_and_Mighty_Coalition), Custom Hashtag: #maskedandmighty

MASKED AND MIGHTY Coalition members include County of Santa Barbara, Sansum Clinic, Cottage Health, CenCal Health, Central Coast Medical Association, Lompoc Valley Medical Center, Lompoc Valley Pediatric Care Center, Marian Regional Medical Center, Santa Barbara City College, Santa Barbara County Promotores Network, Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics, Santa Barbara County Education Office, and School Districts throughout Santa Barbara County, UC Santa Barbara, and Westmont College.

A special appreciation to those who contributed financially to this campaign including Sansum Clinic, Cottage Health, Marian Regional Medical Center and the County of Santa Barbara.

Oh brother, I wonder how much money they blew on this campaign. There isn't a person on the face of the planet that doesn't know the rules by now. Rather that waste money on these kinds of things, how about actually enforcing the rules with steep fines, which could be used to offset lost county revenue from the shutdown (so we don't get our taxes raised).

Public health campaigns take years to show effect. See drunk driving, condom use, and especially smoking. They do have an effect. I don't disagree that this is not an opportune time for a campaign. (See Caputo in president's administration.)

The "Masked and Mighty" campaign is an attempt to educate people, appeal to community spirit and responsibility, and make wearing a mask be more "OK" No, not all people know the rules and understand that masks protect others, more than themselves. That's why it takes everyone to participate. BTW, ... worried about COSTS ?? There are already CA state laws and SB county health orders regarding social distancing and masks. The laws just haven't been ENFORCED ....yet. Enforcing costs a lot lot more $$$ than what you are complaining about. Cops, jails, more Covid in the jails, court, programs, more Covid sickness because of non-participation , hospital and doctor costs etc etc. And, when the hospitals are overrun and, maybe YOU might get Covid...well it might cost you your life. So, everyone should quit complaining, try their best, and wear a mask.

Hi SURFERGIRL, I have to disagree about people not knowing the rules, because been about 8 months of constant reminders. Unless you live on North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal, or in the heart of the Amazon jungle, or on some archipelago along the Northwest Passage, you know all about masks, hand washing, tests and social distancing. There's no excuse now, only willful disregard. As far as enforcing the rules, it does not cost more than $100 to issue a $100 fine, which is the going rate of a first offence. No one said a thing about jail, so I'm not sure where you got that.

Hmmm.... so define to me what an "anti-masker" is? Sounds like marketing lingo. I don't wear a mask at home, don't wear one in the car, don't wear one while I'm out in open space away from others (parking lot, trails, walking outside, etc.) I visit the Ma, talk with the neighbors... I do wear a mask in the businesses that I choose to frequent and give my money to. I don't want to make anyone else uncomfortable, and I want to support my local businesses and ensure that they are not out of 'compliance' by my not wearing a mask... am I domestic terrorist?

No kidding, just start fining people that can't get with the program instead of wasting money on junk like this. The city can't/won't get this done though. They're absolutely ineffective in so many ways. Mountain Man - I'm glad you wear a mask sometimes, but you HAVE TO wear a mask in a business, everyone should know this too, it's not optional. Signs are posted EVERYWHERE.

Basic did you miss the part where mountainman said they wear one inside businesses? “I do wear a mask in the businesses that I choose to frequent and give my money to. I don't want to make anyone else uncomfortable, and I want to support my local businesses and ensure that they are not out of 'compliance' by my not wearing a mask”, please tell us where he says he doesn’t wear one inside? Also I too would like to know wtf general branch means by “anti-maskers” because if they mean outside, not happening. It’s is not real law and that’s why it’s not being enforced. My cop friends roll their eyes at this. Btw- VOR wow, just wow. Best comment I’ve read on here In a long time. I may be pushing it but liberalism is indeed proving to be a mental disorder. So happy I was spared. For those affected there is help.

The "Voice of Reason" (VoR) is anything but a voice of reason. The first sentence and the theme of the entire comment is political, when the fight against Covid-19 never should be political . There is a deadly disease. The best science is, that our best defense right now, is for everyone to wear a mask and social distance. VoR says......(paraphrase) " it should be the person's responsibility to keep themselves safe and not make others wear a mask" Well, when N95 masks are available, when a vaccine is available, and/or if any other personal defense is available ...then it can become more of an individuals responsibility . Just like I can't buy a "force field" to protect myself against drunk drivers. People didn't responsibly drink, so now we have strict laws and the gov't had to protect society. Get it ?? VoR is concerned about the cost of the above campaign to educate people in an effort to increase understanding and appeal to any sense of pride in community. If that doesn't work...wait 'til you see how much it costs to ENFORCE the laws (that are already in place BTW). I also have been financially badly hurt since March BTW, but I'd rather not die. I stay home as much as possible, but I walked out of a market in Isla Vista last week into a group of about 12 unmasked students. People that wear masks protect others, including you, VoR. So, VoR...will you help protect others too ??

I must have missed the part where I discouraged appropriate mask use and basic precautions for communicable diseases Surfergirl. Had those 12 unmasked students walked INSIDE that cornerstore with me, squeezing by in the narrow isles, I'd be disappointed in their behaviour too.

So, BASIC, are you wearing a mask right now? I understand the mandates that businesses are under in order to operate (although no one seems to be checking up on that), and I am happy to comply with the 'health orders' in order to support my local businesses. My question was, what is the definition of an 'anti-masker' and am I am one? If so, am I now considered a domestic terrorist?

yeah sounds like a cool catchphrase for kids with Transformers lunch boxes but what about us adults who have been adhering since march and our arch nemesis anti-maskers who will run by you on the sidewalk and forcefully cough into the stroller youre pushing?

I just had the privilege of being the one with the “power” the dislike general tree’s comments and watch them go poof into the ether.

I worked in a hospital my whole career. We all wear masks. It’s not a big deal. If you’re around other people wear a mask... Don’t be an ass. Has a nice ring to it. Maybe that should have been the campaign?

Liked It’s not a big deal, Don’t be an ass. This is noting personal and Covid 19 is non partisan.
What ever party wins the election will have to wear a mask when they are not 6 feet apart or in a public place, that includes public sidewalks and parking lots. Public is public its your buisness what you do on your own property. We are going to be in this a while....all of us, its just the way it is.

No mountain man your not a terrorist. You are actually doing the right thing. Masks can do a lot of harm worn too often. I measure my oxygen level with and with out it on and you would be surprised how it cuts your oxygen level when your walking around. I do this because of severe asthma. And there was a article just published that 70% of Covid patients wore it’s not to protect you from getting it it’s to protect others from you and if you dont have it..... no brained.
Can someone now answer the question I have been asking for days .whats with all the censoring on edhadt?

It seems like your underlying condition makes you a special case. For most of us it is not a problem. "This is not true for healthy people wearing surgical or cloth masks....... Masks should not be worn by children under the age of 2 years or by anyone with breathing problems. Remember, if you are healthy and breathing normally, a mask will not lower your blood oxygen levels."

So you didn't even read it but you're knocking the source... okay. Sounds like a case of close minded thinking. More importantly, we should NOT be only listening to medical experts (or worse, a single medical expert) when determining policy, even during a pandemic. They are experts in one specific area and don't take into account the many many other factors that need to be considered in developing policy.

1:37 pm: You should probably be aware that if an actual physician (in this case a cardiologist) says that masks aren't enough, he's advocating for a more extensive shutdown of public interaction. That's most likely completely at odds with your totally economic-driven position favoring massive infection and death.

@ 3:37 What those who point to others as having a "totally economic-driven position" don't realize is that for many, the economic consequences are more hazardous to them and their families health and well begin than covid.

Really? Targeting kids is your solution? Skip all the repetition and only report new detailed information. The well-worn repetitious overload leads to complacency among the reasoning; and among those motivated by fear, a false sense of accomplishment.

What's the big deal here? Wear a mask when you can't be 6 feet apart or when you're indoor in business. No need to wear one at home, in the car or at the beach/park/street, unless you're standing/sitting with a bunch of people from other households. I get that some people hate being "told" what to do by the government, but this is just common sense. Everyone knows now that wearing a mask can help slow the spread. Isn't that the goal of everyone? You want businesses open, schools open? Wear the mask and help slow the spread. Easy. Done. Do it.

a-1603994961 Oct 29, 2020 11:09 AM

The big deal is most transmissions occur during inside, close and sustained contact like most flus - just the time when you claim is is not a big deal to wear a mask. So still at this point, the utility of any mask mandate has not been confirmed, nor is it even regarded as practical advice. It remains purely symbolic. Or something. Science has not weighed in on any verifiable data, and the medical media is currently suppressing the 6000 person Danish mask study from peer review, so we remain in the dark.

Why do people keep harping on wearing a mask in a car? There are many reasons that keeping a mask on in the car would be wise, as when transiting from one location where mask use was necessary to the next location where it's necessary. Taking it off and putting it back on would just expose you unnecessarily.

12:27PM. Thank you. We put our masks on at home, run our errands, remove the masks when we return home and drop them in the washing machine, along with whatever clothing we wore outside the house. No need to touch the mask in between.

All us reading this ARE wearing masks. We are. We're doing what's necessary. Great job people. We're not spreading the virus. We've all sacrificed as we were told to. Really. But what this campaign represents is a useless attempt to target that 1% of people that are spreading the virus. As long as we all are being held hostage to their behaviors by our Governor, we're stuck in this. Period. As long as he has these tier rules in place and our local "leadership" just goes along with his dictate, that's where we're all at. Vote.
