Winslow Barnwood, a junior at Dos Pueblos High School in the Engineering Academy and member of the Santa Barbara Astronomical Society, had two of his images shortlisted with one winning third place, ‘Highly Commended,’ in the Royal Greenwich Observatory’s “Insight Investment Astrophotography of the Year -- Young Competition 2020”.

The photos and award listing are shown here: https://www.rmg.co.uk/whats-on/astronomy-photographer-year/galleries/2020/young-competition.

Collision Course by Winslow Barnwood

His two images, “Collision Course!” (highly commended) of the Andromeda Galaxy and “Awash in Starlight” of the Pleiades, were imaged using a telescope, mount and camera that he purchased himself from working locally (at the Santa Barbara Rock Gym).

The images were shot last year at the age of 15. His more recent work on nebulas, globular clusters and planets can be seen on his instagram channel, “rooftop.astro.” Winslow has been creating images of the night sky for two years.

Awash in Blue Starlight by Winslow Barnwood

The Santa Barbara Astronomical Society, in particular Bruce Murdock, helped inspire and guide his early efforts. Winslow is passionate about astronomy and physics and interested in pursuing a major in these fields in college.

Very cool Winslow! I've only seen Andromeda through binoculars so to see this much detail is amazing. Had no idea that round fuzzy ball @left-of-center is a satellite galaxy. Wonder if that's the same Bruce Murdock who used to work at Delco?

Cool. Shoutout to Bruce for inspiring/guiding Winslow! I was a young engineer when we met and went up to Cal to recruit interns. Ask him if he remembers Spenger's Fish Grotto in Berkeley :)

Thank you for the shoutout about Winslow. Ah yes, Cal! I fondly remember the 5-years I spent there, and the return trips to recruit new engineers. I fondly remember Spenger's at the foot of University Avenue. My girlfriend, now wife, and I had many enjoyable dinners there. We did return there many times whenever we were in the Bay Area. Unfortunately they permanently closed in 2018

Yap ! (and Yum !) Anyone who spent time at Cal "back then" remembers Spengers !
Took my then G.F. there too . "Surf & Turf" . It was the upscale institution back then. Too bad they closed .
And don't forget the 1982 "Big Game" ! We sure showed them !

Congratulations to him! It's great to read about a young person in the news for doing something like this rather than causing trouble. I hope this leads to a great career for Winslow!

It has been a real pleasure to work with Winslow. He is very sharp and quick to learn. Also credit to his parents is due, particularly his mother, Zoe, who chauffeured him and his equipment around to the remote astronomical viewing places we went. I'm sure she is relieved that he recently obtained his driver's license.

Right on! That's what we're talking about. Education and parent involvement work. (Please no one come up with some white privileged bs.).

Except the part about Spenger's - what a bummer. They were great.
