There is such a mental health crisis, and it’s putting us all at risk! Every time I’m on the bike trail, I see different, sketchy, transient men coming out of the woodwork...mostly younger ones. I can’t help thinking these were someone’s babies at one time, what happened??
That is tragic about the child abuse, if it is true...with his family’s wealth, I wonder if he ever underwent trauma therapy?
Extensive PTSD therapy should be mandatory in jail and continue upon release, instead of just leaving these men to their own devices, thinking they’ll somehow make better choices next time.

Depending on the study, 60% or so of woman runners have been harassed while exercising, with 30% of them reporting that they had been followed. Harder to find the numbers of them that have been physically assaulted. What an indictment of our society.

The suspect is a local rich kid who has had substance abuse issues for over 20 years. His family owns a place in hope ranch. He had an abusive older brother I recall. Look like Lauren is beach bumming it again. Hope he finds a new path, people like him need the fear of god, maybe he will clean up his act and get high on Jesus instead! Look what Al Merrick did a 180 and Praise Jesus we have a surfboard legend!
So many of my rich friends have taken the bait with substance abuses. it is a hard town to clean up in, so many trying to have a good time. Take a look at the state street cringe these days, everyone struggling to have a good time with the cerveza sickness boot camp!

Only one part of your statement is true. This guy has had substance abuse problems for 30 years. The suspect WAS a local rich kid. His parents didn’t live in Hope Ranch nor did he have an abusive brother. He and his brother were abused by priests at the mission. His families wealth is long gone and his father and sister are deceased. It is amazing the stuff people spew about people they don’t even know.. Did you get the part about the sexual abuse as a young boy.?He endured abuse for years. It destroyed him, it destroyed his family. He has been in and out of jail for the past several years. He deserves to stay there. He lost his right to be in civilization a long time ago. If there was justice in this world he wouldn’t have been let out of jail after the first felony he committed. Then again if the Catholic Church wouldn’t have allowed men to destroy little boys maybe he wouldn’t have ended up here at all...

No, Pimix, I do not. Risk of getting the virus? Hmm, for one do ya think this guy is "risk-averse"? That is, he considers the risks of potential actions ahead of time. He stalked and punched a woman in the face. So, no, I don't think he's really thinking that way, nor is Law a risk assessment type game. You break a law and you deal with the consequences. Go to jail. Maybe get COVID. That's the stakes.
Number two, I'm not Christian and and I don't think we're "a christian nation" either. That's long passed. See Pilgrim times. There's a lot of religious and non religious diversity here now.
This guy and others who would do something like that to another person need to be punished for their actions, in my opinion.

Basic, don't you think going to jail with the risk of getting the virus is punishment enough? I always marvel at people who seem to want the jail experience to be worse than it is already, in our supposedly Christian nation.

Just to update folks who don't follow Noozhawk or Nextdoor, the suspect, Loren Allen, 44, of Goleta, was arrested IV just before 5 pm on the date of the crime. The suspect was positively identified by the victim, and items recovered in the Ellwood area showed his presence.

Hopefully the Sheriff will at look into some of the folks in the Ellwood mesa camps during the next few days. A UCSB police officer said that they and the County Sheriff are aware of the camps but will not clear them because of the pandemic. Just hope that sometime when the wind is up a fire doesn't start in those eucalyptus groves adjacent to 1,000 homes. Or that someone doesn't gets raped or robbed taking a walk up there. I walk there in the morning and see transients regularly.

This discussion reminds me of the one that went on for years regarding the danger of flooding and mudslides in Montecito and the lack of planning for the destruction. The brave Flood Control Director at the time Jim Stubchaer was practically laughed out of the room for his prescient pleads to build flood basins. We are now pleading with the City of Goleta and County Sheriff to at least look into the threat those euc groves and transients pose to so many people in the surrounding neighborhoods. It is just a matter of time before a fire is inadvertently started and the piles of dead trees ignite the whole mess. In addition, dead trees lay across access roads for fire fighters.

I like to walk out there regularly as well and see transients either camped openly, down on the beach near Coal Oil Point, or hidden in the eucalyptus along the Mesa. I inspected one of the recently (pre-COVID) cleared campsites that had been situated within a eucalyptus grove and partially hidden by an number of dead and fallen trees. Sure enough there was bits of charcoal where cooking/warming fires had been set, feet away from a bunch of dead and dried out trees. It's a wonder that place didn't catch fire. Last time I checked the Monarch Preserve was closed do to falling trees, so the amount of fuel building up in that area is really concerning. It's just a matter of time. The Devereaux Slough and adjacent restoration project form a natural fire break to the south, but the north end of that space is loaded with dying eucalyptus and homes just feet away.

I just spoke with the Sheriff dispatch and let them know I was taking out some compost and I saw a man with his description ride a very small bike (for his size) though our neighborhood a few nights back. He was holding what appeared to be a pipe in his outstretched right hand as he was cruising by slowly at around 11 pm. I told my wife that he looked like he was looking for someone or something to use that pipe on. It was burned into my mind because it was so out of place and unnerving. It's believed that he's a transient, probably living out in the Ellwood Mesa. Lots of camps in that area. A few months back, just before COVID, a UCSB student was assaulted nearly the same exact way in one of the open spaces behind the new Sierra Madre complex off Storke. Even if they catch and detain this person, I'd recommend being vigilant if you're walking though those open spaces between the Devereaux Slough and the golf course.
