One person was helicoptered to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital following a UTV collision in the Los Padres National Forest Saturday evening.

At 6:30 p.m., Santa Barbara County Firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle accident off Buckhorn Road. Upon arrival, crews learned the vehicle was a side-by-side utility terrain vehicle (UTV) and it had crashed approximately 100 feet over the side of the roadway, 7 miles from the Upper Oso campground.

Crews learned the male driver sustained injuries in the fall while the male passenger escaped the vehicle before it left the roadway.

Firefighters and Search & Rescue crews were having a difficult time gaining access to the patient due to the location and road conditions. SBC Helicopter 308 was able to locate the victim but was unable to hoist safely. Search & Rescue performed technical rescue using a rope system to bring the patient to the roadway.  Helicopter 308 landed nearby and the patient, who sustained several injuries including broken ribs and a head injury, was flown to Cottage Hospital.

Surprised that gate at Upper Oso was even open. There's a couple more beyond Little Pine Mt.
They probably attempted to bypass same (illegally).

A bit surprised they got through/around the first gate too. 7 trail miles would put them just south of the trailhead for the Buckhorn trail (after that big switchback with lots of exposure but before the water tank up to Happy Hollow). Nothing very technical there, wonder what happened? Not a good time to land in the hospital given the pandemic.

That gate at upper oso is closed. But that’s what happens when you have a key and abuse your privileges. He grades the roads back there and him of all people should know how those roads get after a couple rains. He should be fired! He illegally takes people in before and during deer season.
