A body was discovered off Leadbetter Beach in Santa Barbara early Sunday, not far from an abandoned boat drifting along shore.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., a sailboat was discovered with their lights on and sails up.

Captains aboard the TowBoatUS Assist Ventura were responding to an unrelated call for service off the Santa Barbara coast when they noticed the vessel without anyone at the helm.

“Captains utilized horns, yelling, and VHF ch16 to attempt to make contact with anyone on board to no avail,” according to TowBoatUS.

The Coast Guard was notified of a potential overboard as one of the TowBoatUS Captains jumped onboard the sailboat and to confirm the vessel was unoccupied.

“The Assist Ventura immediately began search patterns while waiting for additional resources,” according to TowBoatUS.

Nearly two and a half hours into the search, the Santa Barbara Harbor Patrol Officers located the body of a male in the water.

The identity of the man has yet to be released pending next of kin notification.

Additional details surrounding this incident have yet to be released.
