Mike Thornley was a regular in Isla Vista for decades. Sometime in the past year he ran out of money and left a note saying he was walking into the mountains. His family has not seen him since and fear the worst. They made the little memorial to him at the Festival to commemorate their presumed loss. Very sad, indeed.

Methinks that those who insist a bobcat is closer to a puma or mountain lion don't realise that it's named after its bobbed, or chopped, tail. And although these kitties are quite big compared to the more domesticated kind they are rather scrawny next to a mountain lion. Glad you finally got a few snaps.

Why doesn't Cal Trans have proofreaders ... |

People make mistakes. But you are correct that Caltrans should have a procedure for taking public input to fix their mistakes. During the huge project in Oxnard at Oxnard Blvd and 101 their signs directed people to the wrong place. I ended up speeding down a closed ramp at high speed and discovering it was blocked off. A bit more serious than just a wrong exit number. When I tried to contact them I got the same response you did: None. They never fixed any of their signs until the project was over months later and the signs were removed. Pretty scary.

Well a quick google search of the company reveals that it is a horrible company indeed. To me, although you are in the right, 200 isnt worth the time. Learn a lesson about checking companies out before you use them. It seems this company has a long history of messing up and ripping off people. In saying that, they are adept at not paying out either. I dont like hassles and headaches. I do believe in the principle of the thing, but not when it gives me too much grief. From what I read online, you have almost no hope of getting your 200, from any legal method...so i would not deal with it. But, in the future...please check out any company before you hire it. There is a vast amount of knowledge online, and it helps to weed out the bad companies from the good. In town University Movers are fantastic.....use them if needed again. Im so sorry that your things got messed up and for your hassle.

Maybe an attorney in the audience can offer some pro-bono advice, but it would appear that the release of future claims or actions against them is contingent on the moving company fulfilling their end of the "contract" by paying out $200 as well. Personally, I would not give it up at this point on principal alone. I would at a minimum file a small claims suit for the $200, which is not any future claims or actions against them, it's the current claims. Good luck!

We had a St. Bernard-Lab mix. He was a real lover. Rescued during the storms and floods in 1995 near the railroad tracks. His mom had died . Rescued by someone who could not keep a dog, Maya was brought him to us as baby. Completely dominated by our very old small cockapoo , he tried so hard to be her baby. We had a band, and he loved to chew wires, so we would but him on top of our piano or amps. He loved to sit on our laps as we played. He never realized he got big and would still jump up like a lap dog to enjoy the music. SO funny, but too heavy. He loved the water and took daily swims in the pool, and would sometimes sneak off to the beach. And then come home, sneak back in and clean up in the pool. Most beautiful brown eyes I have ever seen! He loved coming to our our Baja beach and lagoon. And what a sight he was, with that huge tail always wagging. Maya was a winner in our eyes.

Drivers, get used to looking for bicyclists, because like the Netherlands, India, or China, bikes are growing ever popular in the USA! Learn to drive a car without texting, without using your cell phone, without drinking, and pay attention to bike riders and pedestrians, otherwise, stick to walking. At least then you will obey the traffic laws. In 29% of accidents, automobiles are at fault! Drivers were doing something wrong in 29 per cent of the collisions. Funny, in other countries, drivers and cyclists seem to respect each other, and there are less accidents.

There are dangerous dispensaries in S. California. They are located close to schools. There is no age limit for entry. Anyone can walk through the doors. They have harmful substances and many people are killed or have health problems directly related to what's stocked at the dispensary. These dispensaries offer guns and tobacco and porn and alcohol. They're called Walmarts. So a few regulated storefront collectives...ones that the SB voters voted to keep in place....were raided and shut down by the feds....at the invitation of the city. Something stinks here.

Food prices are subsidized by the very high number of square feet devoted to booze sales at TJ's. Sham front selling "healthy" food and snacks to those want to hide the real reason they come to TJ's hauling the booze out by the shopping cart full of cases, six packs and quarts. I thought everyone knew this was the TJ gimmick. In the good old days the food prices were cheap which was great for non-drinkers to let the boozers subsidize one's grocery bills. But now they offer little that you cannot find anywhere these days for better prices and better quality. Daily Bread, Tri Counties, Shalhoobs and even Gelsons on sale.

Much rather see these guys zip by than the skate-boarders and bikers who scatter pedestrians and laugh while they are doing it. No more dope deals going down with the vagrants and panhandlers either and finally some peace from harassment when sitting at side walk tables. It will be great to take back the streets of downtown SB and city are you listening, increase your retail sales taxes that fund your very own salaries. Read for yourself!: "Almost 200 cyclists were hit by vehicles on roads and streets in this county last year, sparking calls for more cycling lanes and bike trails and more education for both riders and drivers. Most of the collisions occurred at intersections and most happened when cyclists riding on sidewalks continued into the intersection along the crosswalk, according to numbers collected by the region and the cities of Santa Maria, Buellton, Goleta, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria . Cyclists were doing something wrong in 71 per cent of the collisions. That appears to be the case in serveral cyclist-car collision in Santa Barbara County in 2011."

California is one of seventeen states taxing and regulating the sale to medical cannabis from the providers, growers, store keepers to the AMA certified doctors who issue cards to patients to obtain medical cannabis. At every turn California is making money off this herb, but when the Federal government comes in, SB Sheriff dept. not only refuses to uphold the constitution and protect our brave citizens, or at the very least not cooperate with the Fed. gov't., but works "in concert with" the Fed! California needs to protect it's citizens from the Fed. government but is refusing to! Why can't our local peace officers show some backbone? They're looking quite spineless in this case.

Proof positive pot shops were bad from the beginning. Keep it low key and in your own home, just like prostitution and internet porn. Human weakness and need is there obviously, do Just don't rub it in the rest of our faces because it goes against the social contract we have with each other. Show me one country that successfully sells pot legally and maybe we can learn from their best practices. Oh, gosh, there are none.

I agree that it is not worth "jaywalking" on your bike. Bicyclists and drivers of vehicles must share the road and all are required to know the laws of the road. Car drivers that get mad and "hate" cyclists will never be satisfied in this discussion. We need to become more educated on safe riding and have respect for each other.

The young woman riding the bike crossed Montecito from the west side to the east side without regard to oncoming traffic in the middle of the road, not at an intersection. If she was obeying the laws of the road, she would not have been hit by an innocent driver. A very unfortunate reminder that it's not worth "jaywalking" on your bike.

Wow. The babies are still in the nest, but I just saw a towee land on the light cord two lights down (about 6 feet away). While I was contemplating the best way to quickly scare it away (<2 seconds), mama hummingbird zoomed in and off the towee and mama went. Whoosh! She's like a flying spear. Good mama hummingbird.

We don't know what happened. Did the bike rider run the light or lose control? I almost hit a guy on a bike this morning because he ran a stop sign and I didn't have one, had to slam my brakes on because of him. I would feel horrible if I hit someone, even if it was their fault. It is really upsetting how many bad byclists were have in SB.

The people of Santa Barbara voted to approve dispensaries. While federal law does trump state law it is offensive that this took place "working in concert with local authorities". The people of our community spoke and the feds should have been told that they were on their own if they wanted to pursue this. The people spoke and our local authorities ignored it. Not good!!

Straight from the DMV. Motorists must look carefully for bicyclists before turning left or right, merging into bicycle lanes, and opening doors next to moving traffic. Respect the right-of-way of bicyclists because they are entitled to share the road with you.

It is true that all Trader Joe's have limited parking. Look at any Trader Joe's anywhere and you'll see they choose locations with the bare minimum of parking that complies with city ordinances, etc. It's a smart strategy. The more they spend on parking space, the more they have to charge for groceries, and they know their customers and why their customers shop there, and know they will still shop there even if it means walking a little further or shopping at a different time of day.

I posted the bit about telling my east coast colleagues about the TJ parking. I do not have a clue why they have horrible parking. Perhaps @280018 knows something I don't know. Hmm, the grocery retailers I know create buzz in the stores by using colorful displays, tasting samples, well placed shelving, etc. I never heard they predetermine the size of the parking lots to attract people. There are zoning requirements in most cities that determine parking ratios for commercial property.

Obviously most of these posters have not been listening to the City traffic department and the majority of the City Council for the past 20 years. By narrowing the streets, eliminating parking, painting bike lanes everywhere and installling traffic obstructing devices like chicanes, bulbouts, speed bumps and senseless "mini-roundabouts" as they have been doing for years, there would be far less cars on the road. Hence everyone would be walking, riding bikes or taking the massively subsidized buses running only because of the funding $$ from other taxpayers pockets. It would, of course, be the height of political incorrectness to point out, they don't know what they are talking about and never have!

Another great article from Goleta Surfing. History of surfing and history of area filmmaking. I like how you brought it back to the present at the end. I so appreciate the historical details about surfboards, wetsuits, etc. in the early 60's vs. late 70's, and the camera technology, and the lame car-abandonment stunt, so that we can actually understand what's going on in the photos. Those are the details that get lost so easily over time.

Great news, down from 12 in the first weeks, 8 at the last meeting and now we are back to the expected 3 a week. That is thanks to citizen action. No lives are being lost, it's not like there was a sudden drop off in emergencies in the last few months. Plain and simple Cottage stopped transport flights from out of county because residents complained. 902- Come on, No one from LA was getting better care up here than at UCLA or Cedars. Those were the extra 9 flights per week, Those flights have been stopped and we won. Great job whiners;) now all the whining about whiners folks can whine about someone else improving their community. I love it when a plan comes together.

A young woman was admitted to the ER. She was treated with strong pain killers and sent home and told to come back the next day for an appendectimy, as the hospital was too busy and could not handle her now. (yes a copter landed that night) So we bring in helicopters and send home the locals. I think I will keep fighting for the neigborhood. How many patients are locals at SBCH and how many are out of towners? I don't think that the population of SB will provide SBCC with the income that is required to maintain the hospital. It is a not for profit hospital but the CEO makes 1.5 million. And yes lack of sleep makes people wine. All we want is a good nights sleep and a hospital that can take care of it's community.

Bobcats are in the genus Lynx (along with the Canada lynx, Eurasian lynx, and Iberian lynx), but they definitely shouldn't be called "a lynx." In the Americas, "a lynx" refers to the Canada lynx. The Canada lynx is dependent on snowshoe hares and only lives in areas with significant amounts of snow, whereas bobcats eat many types of rabbits and rodents and can live in a wide variety of habitats. There are no natural populations of lynx in California. Lynx have MUCH bigger paws, longer ear tufts, and their tails have a black tip. They're generally larger and furrier, with fewer spots, though bobcats also get larger and furrier in colder areas.

I find the prices for the stuff I buy at TJs to be competitive or better than the chain grocery stores, and the quality of the food is much better. Their cheeses are far superior. The breads will grow mold in a week while the chain store breads are good for several weeks, which I interpret to be due to preservatives in the nonTJ bread. Of course, if you are enticed to buy the desserts and chocolates, you can end up spending a lot of money, but for basic stuff I am very pleased with what I get there.

Yes, I miss the old days of the Festival being in the park, too. But people come from far and wide to juggle. And April is usually windy, which is not good for juggling in the park. Some of us also enjoy being able to use the smooth gym floor for new unicycle and other balancing tricks. Yes, I am mystified why so few from the community come out to enjoy this amazing treat. It is a gem that is worth traveling for and it is right here at home for us! I have been attending the Festival since 1982 and am sorry I never had the pleasure of knowing Patty. I am happy we can preserve her memory and help the Rape Crisis Center.

Segway is just doing what all businesses try to do. Find a market for a product that is not that useful. They have been selling them to police all over. This makes some sense when the cops are being asked to patrol a beach for example but not on sidewalks. We should do what all suckers targeted by this sort of sales pitch should do--say no. Of course getting the police to turn down a new toy is going to be hard.

Haven't been to TJ's in years ever since they jacked up their prices during the last grocery store strike and local shoppers piously refused to cross union picket lines and went instead to non-union TJ's who responded to this windfall by exploiting the new shoppers with higher prices. Plus TJ started adulterating all their food with chemical supplements so you couldn't find what used to make them famous -real food at low prices, subsidized by their high volume liquor sales.

Couldn't agree with you more Roger. I think they will still be using home delivery services, just not storefront dispensaries. Interesting though, as there were a few dispensaries that seemed to be in compliance. One in old town Goleta has been there since the very beginning, leading me to believe they actually followed the rules. Shame that people really can't be free to do what they please, so long as they don't hurt anyone.

I also can see the Segway's getting stolen but like a boat or jet ski they'll probably be equipped with keys that are attached to the patrol person and detach with a short distance thus shutting down the Segway but I really don't know for sure. Last nights meetings was a waste of time. We were lied to and yelled at. I have never been to such a public disgrace! It was repeated over and over again. "I already said this at a smaller meeting". Well I have a life and cannot attend every meeting. We were put in a hot small room with not enough seating. Cottage would not respond until the media had left making the meeting go until 8pm. While the media was there all they talked about was the up and coming demolistion and removal of asbestos. So sad. So very very sad. BTW Ron Wolf makes 1.5 million that's the info of the night.

It's a fascinating display. Grandkids (4 and 6) had a great time climbing around the B-17 and the B-24. Sort of fixated on the machine guns, so I have the (questionably) wonderful experience of photographing the kids appearing to shoot 50 caliber weapons from the window of a legendary bomber. When you look at these things and compare them to other planes you've seen, it's a wonder they could fly at all, much less carry around tons of bombs while they did it.

Thanks for sharing this amazing process....they are looking like they'll need to fly soon. The nest won't hold them much longer....yesterday when I was weeding in my garden a little freshly flying hummer, still wearing its monochrome feathers, hovered near me, I was wearing a brightly red flowered shirt. It came back to me three or four times, leading me to believe that this was among its first food foraging trips, and got fooled by the bright print. Spring is beautiful here in SB.

Appreciate the pictures to keep track of the little ones. If you like hummingbirds I found I can attract them with the proper plants. Sage, the kind with the long branches of purple flowers. I just replaced several Mexican Sage plants in my front yard. I find it sometimes called Santa Barbara Sage. A heavy wind after a rain at the end of last summer here damaged my last year plants and only a three are regrowing successfully albeit slowly. I expect to see hummingbirds in the yard again as the plants begin to grow larger. The birds seem to make quick trips between the 55 year old orange tree and the sage bushes. Unfortunately I'm in the San Jose area but still like to keep contact with my many years growing up in Santa Barbara and wish I were living there again! However SB sure isn't the nice small town that I grew up in... Happens everywhere!

I was at that meeting last night. The Cottage Hospital executive was a one-man inept disaster, who instead of pretending to give a dam just argued loudly with the public. All they have to do is fake like they care, but instead they just piss off all the neighbors, by inviting them to get abused when supposedly a guest. The hospital staff and consultants have plenty of nice and pretty women like Suzanne Elledge, who can pretend they care even though they do not, but at least they would not argue with the public. This KEYT story really missed the point, especially because their pretty woman reporter was not even there, so she just faked it, missing the tone and color of the disastrous meeting.

The video is analyzed by counting vehicles and used to determine street utilization and improve traffic safety.
