A man is in custody after leading officers on a vehicle pursuit Sunday night, fleeing into a west end neighborhood, and attempting to hide inside an occupied home before being safely arrested.
Shortly after 9:25 p.m., officers were alerted to a stolen pickup truck traveling northbound on Ventura Avenue. When they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver fled, leading to a brief pursuit that ended on a cul-de-sac on the city’s west end. The driver, identified as Jacob Carlisle (32), ran from the still-moving vehicle, which rolled forward and collided with a parked car. A female passenger remained at the scene and cooperated with officers.
Officers immediately searched the surrounding neighborhood. Multiple residents reported seeing a man running through yards and climbing fences. A nearby resident flagged down police to report a man attempting to climb a fence near where the stolen vehicle had stopped.
Officers located the suspect a short distance away riding an e-bike. When confronted, he ran into the backyard of a nearby home and forced his way into an attached room. As officers attempted to detain him, the suspect threw objects through a window, causing minor injuries to one officer from broken glass. He then ran into the main part of the home. Out of concern for the people inside, officers breached a locked door to continue the search.
The suspect ultimately fled out the front door, where officers took him into custody. Carlisle suffered cuts to his arms, believed to be caused by breaking the window glass. He was treated at Ventura County Medical Center then booked at the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of vehicle theft, residential burglary, resisting an officer, vandalism, and felony evading.
“This was a dangerous and unpredictable situation in a residential area where families were home for the evening,” said Assistant Chief Matt Cain. “We’re grateful for the residents who quickly reported what they were seeing. It directly helped officers locate and safely arrest the suspect.”
The Ventura Police Department encourages residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they see suspicious or illegal activity in-progress. Anyone with additional information related to this incident is asked to contact the Ventura Police Department at 805-339-4400.
