In a heartwarming tale of reunion, the Santa Paula Police Department helped an ailing lost dog return to its home.

The pet dog was recently found and reunited with its owner, the police department shared in a social media post on December 29, 2025. The reunion was more meaningful as the dog is suffering from cancer.

The department’s Animal Control Officer and Patrol Officer visited the dog’s owner at their residence.

“The owner provides a caring and wonderful home with plenty of necessities and love,” the police added in its post on X.

Dogs often tend to run away or hide in hard-to-locate locations when they are sick. This action mostly stems from an instinct to hide their weak and vulnerable state from predators.

Lost dogs, especially those suffering from an illness, face risks such as injury, starvation, predators, harsh weather, and traffic accidents.

In addition to the successful reunion, the Santa Paula Police Department is continuing its efforts to reunite other lost animals with their owners and return them to their homes.

In another post on X on December 29, 2025, the authorities shared an image of a dog that was found near Main St. and Peck Road.

In yet another update on X, the police shared images of two pet dogs that were found near 8th St. and Santa Paula St.

Police are continuing to locate the owner and are encouraging the owner or anyone with information to come forward.

Police departments across counties are working on rescuing pets and reuniting them with their families.

Earlier this year, San Luis Obispo Sheriff’s deputy on patrol and community members joined hands to rescue a senior pup at Lake Nacimiento

Jagger, a 16-year-old dog, was trapped in the mud near the lake in Heritage Ranch and coyotes were closing in on him. A deputy on patrol and residents quickly responded and built a makeshift bridge to rescue the dog.

How to Keep Pets Safe at Home

Discovering pets have gone missing can be traumatic for both the lost pet as well as for the owner. Here are some things to ensure to keep your pets safe at home:

  • Check your fence line to ensure pets cannot dig under or climb over.
  • Spaying or neutering your pet decreases the animal’s desire to escape and wander off.
  • Ensure your pet is regularly walked, gets adequate exercise, and social interaction to keep them content at home.
  • Plan ahead of events if your pet is easily startled by loud sounds, fireworks, or other unusual events. Keep your pet confined indoors in such events.
  • Ensure your pets wear collars with ID tags with your name and contact information. If possible, implant a microchip for a more reliable means of identification.
