Two Suspects Arrested Following Violent Assault at Elm Street Park

On March 20, 2026, at around 1:45 am, officers from the Arroyo Grande Police Department were dispatched to a report of a violent assault that just occurred Elm Street Park. When they arrived on scene, they contacted the victim, identified as an elderly, unhoused member of the community.
 
The victim told officers he had been sleeping under the Elm Street Park gazebo, when he woke up to a suspect urinating on him. After confronting the suspect, he was violently attacked by this suspect and a second suspect, both of whom repeatedly kicked the victim in the head and torso. The victim was later transported to a local hospital for medical treatment for serious injuries.
 
Investigators were able to identify, and later arrest both of the suspects for multiple felony charges. A key component in the investigation and identification of the suspects was the City’s public safety camera system, which captured video of the assault.
 
Based on the investigation, both suspects were arrested and booked into custody.
 
Malachy Damien Hayes (18 y/o), of Arroyo Grande, was booked on charges of:

  • PC 243(d) – Battery Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Felony)
  • PC 368(b)(2)(A) – Elder Abuse Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Felony)

Boaz Winslow Brigham (20 y/o), of Arroyo Grande, was booked on charges of:

  • PC 243(d) – Battery Causing Serious Bodily Injury (Felony)
  • PC 368(b)(1) – Elder Abuse (Felony)
  • PC 245(a)(4) – Assault by Means of Force Likely to Produce Great Bodily Injury (Felony)
