Pedal Power: A Fun, Healthy, and Sustainable Way to Get Around

This May, the City celebrated National Bike Month, encouraging community members to leave their car keys at home and put their bike helmets on. Bike Month’s goal is to help community members of all ages and experiences see how easy and enjoyable biking can truly be.

With the help of our dedicated partners, we celebrated through events such as the Bike Month Kickoff Party, Bike Breakfast event with PACE, and the SLO Fire Department Pancake Bike Breakfast.

While Bike Month must come to an end, we hope it has inspired you to incorporate biking as a primary mode of transportation for school, work, or adventure. Happy biking!

Hot off the Press: City Council Adopts Vision Zero Action Plan

On May 19th, 2026, the City Council adopted the first-ever Vision Zero Action Plan, a guiding document focused on eliminating all traffic-related fatalities and severe injuries in San Luis Obispo. Its core message is simple: one death on our streets is too many.

“I would hope that we actually begin to feel safe, our children feel safe, that I feel safe as a senior person here who uses the streets daily as both a pedestrian and cyclist… I strongly support Vision Zero.” – Steve Jarrett, Resident

The City of San Luis Obispo continues to make significant investments in transportation infrastructure to create safer, more connected, and more accessible routes for people who walk, ride, drive, and ride buses. Particularly, the City’s Public Works Department has been diligently working on the Complete Streets Projects, centered around improving the safety, accessibility, and reliability of Higuera, Foothill, and Broad Street. Stemming from the City’s Vision Zero Program and Active Transportation PlanComplete Streets can reduce traffic speeds, lower the risk of crashes, and create healthier, more active communities by providing safe routes to school, work, and play.
