Public Art Community Mural Volunteer Painters

Spring is the perfect time to add a little color to SLO!  The City of San Luis Obispo’s Public Art Program is inviting community members to help paint a community mural on March 7. No artistic experience is needed! All supplies and protective gear will be provided, and City staff will be on site to guide volunteers through the process as you help create a vibrant new piece of public art. Come ready to get a little messy, meet neighbors, and leave your mark on a project that will brighten a local neighborhood for years to come. Families, friends, and groups are all welcome to join the fun!

Johnson Ranch Open Space Restoration Volunteer

Spring is the perfect time to care for the places that make SLO so special.  Join us at Johnson Ranch Open Space to help restore grasslands and support creek health through hands-on stewardship projects.

A short orientation will be held March 3 from 4–5 PM (sign-ups close at noon tomorrow), after which trained volunteers can help with ongoing restoration efforts like removing invasive plants, collecting seeds, and supporting habitat improvements. If you enjoy hiking, fresh air, and making a lasting impact on our natural spaces, this is a meaningful way to give back while learning alongside fellow nature lovers.

Jack House Docents
Help history bloom this spring at the Historic Jack House & Gardens!  The City of San Luis Obispo is looking for Volunteer Docents to help bring local history to life through guided tours and special events from May through December. Join a friendly team of volunteers and help keep the stories of San Luis Obispo growing for future generations.

Adopt-A-Park Volunteers
Spring is a great time to show a little love for SLO’s parks!  The City of San Luis Obispo’s Adopt-a-Park program invites individuals, families, and groups to help care for one of the City’s 27+ parks by picking up litter, wiping down surfaces, and supporting simple beautification projects. It’s a simple, meaningful way to enjoy the outdoors while helping keep our shared spaces clean, welcoming, and thriving for everyone who visits.

How to Sign Up to Volunteer with the City

Engage SLO is the City’s online volunteer portal that connects passionate community members with meaningful volunteer opportunities to improve our community. Creating an account allows you to easily review and sign up for volunteer roles, manage your volunteer schedule, track your hours / contribution, and access valuable resources.

How to volunteer with the City:

  1. Create a free and data-safe account by completing a few questions on Engage SLO, volunteer.slocity.org/user/register.
(NOTE: This requires a legitimate email address. If this presents a barrier for anyone, please contact us directly.)

  2. Find a service opportunity that matches your availability and interests, click respond to submit your Volunteer Waiver, and confirm your Emergency Contact Information.

  3. Await details from the Volunteer Program, like where to meet, what to bring, and what to expect, etc. a few days before your shift.

  4. Show up, have fun, and log your hours in the volunteer portal once your shift is complete.

If technology isn’t your thing, please contact the City’s Volunteer Program at volunteer@slocity.org or call / text the Volunteer Program Coordinator at 805-858-0771 with any questions or for other registration options.
