The City of San Luis Obispo is giving its public transit system a digital makeover this spring.
The city announced it is rolling out several technology upgrades to make bus travel more convenient and faster for he community.
With an increasing number of riders using their smartphones and digital platforms to plan their trips, SLO Transit’s latest enhancements focuses on upgrades that will help enhance real-time bus tracking, improve trip planning tools, and modern fare payment options to improve access.
To ensure a seamless traveling experience, SLO Transit is coordinating the upgrades with regional partners, including San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (RTA), San Luis Obispo Council of Governments (SLOCOG), Cal Poly, and local social service providers.
New Transit App
SLO Transit is supporting Transit as its new real-time bus tracking app. The existing SLO Transit app will be discontinued as part of this change.
The service aims to provide information on bus arrivals, trip planning options, and service updates directly on their smartphones. The app offers accurate, real-time locations of buses, step-by-step navigation, and rider alerts, helping riders plan when and where to catch the bus.
The new app is expected to improve the overall rider experience with an updated user-friendly platform.
Contactless Payment Method
Beyond tracking buses real-time, SLO Transit is also streamlining the overall rider experience by introducing a new payment system.
Scheduled to roll out in May 2026, the Tap2Ride system will enable passengers to pay their fare by tapping a contactless debit or credit card when boarding the bus.
The new system will support Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, along with mobile wallets such as Apple Pay and Google Pay.

In addition to making payment more convenient, the new payment system also reduces the dependence on cash, paper tickets, and separate transit passes, thereby making boarding a faster experience.
Riders who are eligible for discounted fares will be able to access the reduced fares through Tap2Ride.
The new system is part of California’s statewide transit updation initiative through Cal-ITP (California Integrated Travel Project).
The new system will ensure automatic fare capping, as riders will not be expected to pay more than the cost of a daily, multi-day, or monthly pass when using the same payment method.
In addition to Tap2Ride, public transit will continue to accept existing payment options, including cash, bus passes, and mobile ticketing.
Text to Ride System
SLO Transit is also looking beyond app-based solutions.
A new text-based rider communication tool is expected to make transit information more accessible without requiring an app.
Through Ride Text, passengers can text a bus stop number to receive real-time bus arrival information, route details, and service updates through SMS.
The service is ideal for those who want to reduce wait times and prefer text messaging over mobile apps.
The service expected to roll out this summer.
“These technology upgrades help improve access, reduce barriers, and create a more seamless transit experience for everyone who rides SLO Transit,” said Alex Fuchs, Mobility Services Business Manager.
