San Luis Obispo is restricting large street parties this St. Patrick’s Day as the City of San Luis Obispo and California Polytechnic State University increase enforcement.
Officials announced several Safety Enhancement Zones and increased penalties to prevent large and disruptive gatherings during the holiday period.
City officials said the city will again take a zero-tolerance approach this year, with increased law enforcement presence and stricter penalties during key celebration periods in March.
The measures are intended to maintain order in neighborhoods and prevent celebrations from turning into unsafe street parties, according to the City.
To help keep our community safe during upcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, SLO’s Safety Enhancement Zone will be in effect citywide from midnight to 7 a.m. on the following dates:

The City of San Luis Obispo said the entire city will be designated as a Safety Enhancement Zone during multiple enforcement periods.
The enforcement periods will run from Friday, March 6 at midnight through Monday, March 9 at 7 a.m.; from Friday, March 13 at midnight through Monday, March 16 at 7 a.m.; and from Tuesday, March 17 at midnight through Wednesday, March 18 at 7 a.m.
According to the City, the designated periods are intended to cover the weekends leading up to the holiday, when large gatherings have historically occurred.
During the Safety Enhancement Zone periods, fines for violations of the city’s municipal code will be doubled. Noise violations, public urination and open container offenses will start at $700, while unruly gathering violations will begin at $1,000.
The City also said warnings will not be issued during these enforcement periods, meaning those who violate the rules can expect immediate citations and fines.
The City of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly are working together to prevent large gatherings that have disrupted neighborhoods in the past. Their joint effort includes increased law enforcement patrols in residential areas near campus and on university grounds.
Cal Poly Restrictions for Students and Visitors
Cal Poly has also introduced several restrictions for students and visitors during the St. Patrick’s Day period.
Guests will not be permitted in on-campus housing from March 12 through March 17. In addition, overnight visitor parking will not be available on campus during that period.
Officials also said that any student arrested or cited during this period may face review through Cal Poly’s student conduct process.
To provide an alternative to off-campus gatherings, Cal Poly will host an on-campus event called the Morning on the Green concert. The event is scheduled to take place at the Sports Complex Lower Fields.
The university said the concert is intended to provide a structured setting for students and offer an alternative to off-campus gatherings that have caused problems in previous years.
