The City is planning for future improvements to Foothill Boulevard and welcomes your input.
Community members who walk, bike, use a wheelchair, drive or ride the bus on Foothill Boulevard are invited to drop in and discuss the future of this major roadway at a community open house on Thursday, April 2 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at Pacheco Elementary School (261 Cuesta Drive, San Luis Obispo).
Those who drop by will learn about the project and its goals, can share their experiences with staff, and share their top priorities for improving the street for everyone.
Many community members use Foothill Boulevard to travel to Cal Poly, K–12 schools, places of worship, parks, neighborhoods, and essential services. The City’s goal is to improve safety and accessibility for everyone who uses the street, whether walking, biking, driving, using a wheelchair or riding the bus.
Since 2017, three people walking or biking have been killed on this stretch of road, and many others have been seriously hurt. Because of these incidents and safety concerns shared by community members, the City has identified Foothill Boulevard as a high priority for improvements.
The Foothill Complete Streets Project is an important step toward making San Luis Obispo safer for everyone. Planning efforts will consider upgrades for Foothill Boulevard from the western City limits near the Bishop Peak trailhead to the railroad tracks near California Boulevard.
The City is transforming roads into multi-modal, safer, and more efficient public spaces. “Complete Streets” are roadways designed to safely and comfortably accommodate all uses of the street: walking, bicycling, using a wheelchair, riding a bus, driving, and emergency response. They help improve safety, increase transportation equity, boost public health, and create vibrant, accessible communities.
