The Pacific Surfliner is set to start a new daily round-trip service between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo, beginning May 4, 2026, to improve travel along California’s Central Coast.
The LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency announced the service in partnership with the Ventura County Transportation Commission and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG).
Officials said the move is designed to strengthen connectivity across counties while making rail travel more accessible for riders.
Daily Round-Trip Service To Help Commuters During Peak Hours
Under the new schedule, the additional round-trip between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo will increase overall service frequency across the corridor. Daily trips will rise to six for Goleta and three for San Luis Obispo, adding more service during peak weekday hours and allowing commuters to better plan travel during busy periods.
The enhanced service is expected to improve connections between Los Angeles, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, and San Luis Obispo County, according to Amtrak.
In addition, the expanded schedule is expected to support leisure trips, particularly for those exploring destinations along the California coastline.
The added round-trip would make travel more convenient while strengthening connections across the rail network, LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency Managing Director Jason Jewell said in a statement.
VCTC and SBCAG Welcome Talk About Better Transit Access
The Ventura County Transportation Commission said the change would improve access to Southern California’s broader transit system.
Meanwhile, the SBCAG noted that the expansion reflects commitments made through Measure A, a voter-approved transportation funding initiative.
At the local level, Ventura County residents are expected to gain greater flexibility when commuting within the region or traveling to nearby counties.
In Santa Barbara County, the additional service aligns with long-term transit improvements funded through Measure A, offering more consistent options for work, school, and daily travel needs.
To maximize the service’s impact, SBCAG will host an employer-focused forum on April 22, 2026, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Goleta. The event is intended to help businesses understand how expanded rail services can support employee commuting and improve access to jobs across the region.
The Pacific Surfliner operates along a 351-mile coastal route connecting San Diego County to San Luis Obispo County. Trains offer onboard features such as Wi-Fi, power outlets, comfortable seating, and coastal views, allowing passengers to use travel time for work or study.
