Additional Daily Service Strengthens Central Coast Connections And Provides New Travel Options For Residents, Commuters, And Visitors.

The County of San Luis Obispo has expanded passenger rail service with the launch of a third daily Pacific Surfliner roundtrip train, improving connectivity between the Central Coast and Southern California. Launched May 4, 2026, the new daily roundtrip increases rail service to three trains serving San Luis Obispo County, providing more flexible travel options for commuters, students, and visitors.

The 12-month pilot service expansion, led by the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency in partnership with the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments and Ventura County Transportation Commission, represents a continued investment in passenger rail and a key step forward in improving alternative mobility options.

“With this additional roundtrip, our regional transportation partners are expanding reliable travel options for the Central Coast and making it easier for residents and visitors to choose rail over driving. Increased rail service strengthens regional connections, supports our local economy, and provides a more convenient and comfortable way to travel,” said SLOCOG Executive Director Pete Rodgers.

The added service improves schedule availability throughout the day, including peak travel periods, giving riders greater flexibility when commuting or planning trips between San Luis Obispo County and destinations such as Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles. The new southbound train departs the City of SLO at 12:12 p.m. and runs all the way to San Diego. The Pacific Surfliner continues to offer amenities including comfortable seating, onboard Wi-Fi, and scenic coastal views, making it an attractive alternative to driving or flying.

“Expanding Pacific Surfliner service is key to meeting the region’s growing mobility needs. This additional roundtrip improves connectivity across multiple counties and provides a more flexible, reliable option for travelers throughout the Central Coast,” said Managing Director of the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency Jason Jewell.

Expanding rail service is particularly important for San Luis Obispo County, where growing travel demand, tourism, and regional commuting patterns continue to put pressure on the transportation system. With more departures throughout the day, riders have greater flexibility and shorter wait times, making it easier to take same-day trips, commute between regions, or travel without a car.

SLOCOG continues to support and enhance passenger rail access through local programs that make rail travel more affordable and accessible.

Rail Fare Buy-Down Program

In partnership with the LOSSAN Rail Corridor Agency, SLOCOG implemented a first-of-its-kind rail pilot program offering discounted Amtrak Pacific Surfliner fares between San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach, and Guadalupe. The program provides a cost-effective option for commuters and travelers between these points for two to four dollars, particularly during construction impacts along U.S. 101 in South County, and helps encourage a shift toward transit use.

SLO Car Free Program

SLOCOG also supports the SLO Car Free program, which encourages visitors to travel to and around San Luis Obispo County without a car. Participants receive discounts on transportation, lodging, and local attractions, including Amtrak travel incentives, helping promote cleaner air, reduced congestion, and a more sustainable visitor experience.

Together, expanded rail service and local programs reflect a coordinated effort to improve mobility, increase transportation options, and enhance quality of life across San Luis Obispo County.
