Several mountain lion sightings have been reported throughout San Luis Obispo, the City announced on January 13, 2026.

In recent weeks, community members reported seeing a mountain lion near Laguna Lake and Irish Hills Open Space, the City said.

Responding to the sightings, city biologist Freddy Otte reported the information to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the City said

Because no pets were reported missing and the mountain lion is moving frequently, Otte said he is hopeful the animal is following deer foraging in the area after recent rains.

Otte has served as the City’s biologist for 20 years and provides expertise in identifying and protecting San Luis Obispo’s natural and biological resources, the City said.

“We expect the mountain lion will move back into the open space or away from the residential neighborhoods, but the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is working to track its movements,” Otte said in the statement.

Mountain lions mostly prey on large animals, such as deer, elk, pronghorn, bighorn sheep, wild pigs, feral horses, and burros, according to the state wildlife department. However, they change their behavior and may hunt other animals (such as pets, poultry, small livestock) according to environmental conditions, availability of prey, and competing large carnivores.

There are very few reports of mountain lion attacks on humans. Since 1890, there have been only six reported fatal attacks on humans by mountain lions in California, according to the wildlife department.

The recent sightings of the large cat is a good example that the community resides in a shared mountain lion territory, Otte said, reminding citizens that peaceful coexistence is necessary.

Tips for Peaceful Coexistence

Here are some tips Otte suggested to safely coexist with animals:

  • Stay calm. The region is home to several wildlife species, which have been roaming the hills and valleys and are a natural part of the environment. While the recent sightings may have caused concern, attacks on humans are extremely rare and rarer in urban areas. While it is normal to get frightened to encounter a mountain lion, the creatures are usually shy and will avoid humans if given the chance. If you encounter a mountain lion, remain calm, maintain eye contact, and retreat slowly while making yourself appear large and loud.
  • Take precautions. Mountain lions are typically active at night, dawn, and dusk. Avoid planning activities near open spaces during these times. If you have to step out at those hours, stay on established trails or well-lit areas, and try to stay in groups.
  • Keep a close watch on children and pets. Do not feed any wildlife, even if it seems harmless. Secure garbage bins, bird feeders, and compost bins at night to prevent attracting any creatures into your home.
  • Report sightings immediately. Call 911 if you feel threatened by a mountain lion. Even if you are not threatened, quickly report any encounters or sightings to the wildlife department to help teams track and manage their population. Ensure to report the date and location in your report.
