A full closure of Highway 1 is currently underway from Ragged Point Inn in San Luis Obispo County to about one mile south of Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn in Monterey County, according to a February 16 update from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

The closure was triggered by the heavy winter storms, which resulted in rockslides and debris blocking the roadway at several locations.

There is no estimated reopening time, according to Caltrans. Crews will reassess conditions at daylight to determine next steps for clearing the route.

The closure comes as rainy weather has also delayed infrastructure projects inland. Work on all SLO in Motion projects, including transportation, pavement, and mobility improvements, has been postponed due to rain.

Work is expected to resume once the weather improves.

The pause in infrastructure work affects a range of ongoing street improvements across San Luis Obispo City. This includes repairing pavements, upgrading sidewalks, curb ramp work, and enhancements to several intersections.

Once weather permits, the City will resume grinding and paving work on Tank Farm Road from Wavertree Street to Poinsettia Street, continuing toward Broad Street.

Commuters should expect traffic delays due to flagging operations, lane closures, and shifting traffic patterns.

Work will also continue on-site for the Mission Plaza Enhancement Project once weather conditions improve. Additional traffic delays are expected due to road closures, detours, and construction activity in the area.

Pedestrians can use the sidewalk near the construction site, but there may be intermittent detours.

Sidewalk and landscaping work is continuing as part of the Cultural Arts District Parking Garage project.

The City has completed repaving Sacramento Drive from Industrial Way to Via Esteban to extend the life of the pavement surface and improve pedestrian safety and visibility.

These improvements include eight upgraded non-compliant curb ramps and one new ADA-compliant curb ramp, 7,544 tons of asphalt as part of the roadway reconstruction, and 2,500 linear feet of paved roadway.

The improvements also include 1,272 linear feet of buffered bike lanes for better safety and comfort for bikers, and 1,150 sq. ft. of green bike lane marking for enhanced visibility.
