A vegetation fire was reported near a solar facility in San Luis Obispo County on April 19, with containment efforts underway.
The fire broke out at around 8:43 p.m. near Cloverdale Trail and Cactus Trail in California Valley, and firefighters have since been working to slow its spread.
The Helios Fire has already burned around 170 acres so far and remains active and uncontained, according to the Cal Fire. The containment work is ongoing, with the cause of the fire still under investigation, according to Cal Fire updates.
According to initial reports, the fire had spread to about 150 acres and was likely to rapidly escalate to 2,000 acres. However, reports indicate that the burning rate has decreased, enabling firefighters to move into action.
Firefighters reportedly managed to contain the fire at its head, which helped prevent it from spreading rapidly.
No structural damage was reported, with no further threat to any structure at this point. No injuries were also reported due to the incident.
No evacuation orders or warnings have been issued yet.
According to an update shared by Cal Fire at 10:28 p.m., the fire has shown a slower rate of spread, with the potential spread gone down from 2000 acres to around 200 acres.
The firefighters are currently working to hold the fire to 170 acres, working throughout the night to ensure containment.
Cal Fire reported that 35 personnel are working on the incident. These include 10 engines, one dozer, two water tenders, and one additional support unit.
As the solar photovoltaic (PV) installer jobs are expected to grow 51% between 2019 and 2029, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, learning how to stay safe while working with or around solar panels.
The National Wildfire Coordinating Group said all solar PV system components at a fire scene should be treated as live, as they can carry dangerous voltage.
These systems continue generating electricity even if grid power is shut off, and panels may still hold residual charge days after sunlight exposure. Battery storage systems also remain energized at all times.
If a PV system catches fire or is at risk of fire, crews should immediately alert others and notify command. Maintaining safe distances and avoiding downwind exposure is critical due to toxic smoke.
The risk of electric shock and continuous power generation makes PV systems especially hazardous during fires, requiring strict safety precautions.
