The historic Fremont Theater can reopen to the public today after weeks of being closed due to safety concerns. The City will also reopen the adjacent sidewalk today.

An engineer evaluated the damaged sign and determined the building itself is safe (the damage to the sign does not pose a safety hazard to the whole building). The City’s Community Development Department staff reviewed the evaluation and reinstated the building’s Certificate of Occupancy, effective April 8, 2026.

“We appreciate the community’s patience as we worked with the property owner to safely reopen the Fremont Theater and surrounding area,” said Community Development Director Timothea Tway. “We will continue working closely with the property owner to ensure the exterior of the Fremont Theater is repaired safely and in a way that preserves its historic character.”

The street and surrounding sidewalks were closed in February after a winter storm caused part of the Fremont Theater’s iconic tower sign to break and fall onto the sidewalk and roadway. No injuries were reported, and the City immediately closed a portion of Monterey Street and the adjacent sidewalk out of an abundance of caution. The City later suspended the building’s Certificate of Occupancy, halting events at the venue, after concerns were raised about the damaged sign’s impact on the safety.

During the closure, the City encouraged community members to continue supporting nearby restaurants and businesses as well as the nearby County Courthouse and Government Center, remain open and accessible.

Last week, the City reopened Monterey Street in front of the theater after it was determined safe to restore vehicle traffic to the area. Pedestrians can now safely use the pedestrian tunnels installed on the sidewalk in front of the Fremont Theater as repair work continues. Lighting and security cameras are installed as additional safety precautions.

The Fremont Theater is privately owned, and the property owner is responsible for repairs. The City’s role is to review permits, ensure all work meets safety and historic preservation standards, and manage access to public spaces such as streets and sidewalks. City staff will continue to provide updates as work progresses and more information becomes available.
