The City of San Luis Obispo is set to open a new public parking garage.

The new Cultural Arts District Parking Garage will officially open on March 17, 2026, at 8 a.m., the City announced in a social media post.

Open to the public 24 hours a day, the new parking garage adds nearly 400 parking spaces, 41 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, 14 bike lockers, and 16 bike parking spaces.

Located on the corner of Nipomo and Palm Streets, the parking garage will offer free parking for the first 28 days, from March 17 through April 13, 2026.

Thereafter, parking rates will be $2 per hour with a daily maximum of $8, which is the same as other downtown public parking garages, according to the City. Monthly garage permits will be available for $45 and offer unlimited access to all downtown garages.

EV charging stations will include an additional fee of $0.50 per kWh.

In addition to parking spaces, the garage includes a rooftop event space. The rooftop also features solar panels to offset energy consumption and underground utilities to improve reliability, safety, and the surrounding streetscape, according to the City.

While the rooftop event space is not yet open to the public, the City will provide more information about reserving the space later this summer.

A real-time parking guidance system will help drivers locate available spaces.

To support downtown businesses, the garage will also offer a parking validation program. Local businesses can purchase discounted garage parking validations for their customers.

Largest Infrastructure Investment in the Downtown

With an investment of about $43 million, the public parking garage is the City’s largest infrastructure investment in downtown San Luis Obispo, the City said in the statement.

The parking garage is the fourth public parking structure operated by the City’s Parking Services team.

“This is the largest downtown infrastructure investment the City has ever made, and we invite the community to take advantage of this opportunity to park at no cost in the new garage and familiarize themselves with this new gateway to the downtown,” said City Manager Whitney McDonald.

Construction of the project began in November 2023 following more than 20 years of public engagement, planning, and design.

In addition to adding parking spaces, the project is expected to increase transportation options downtown and support the development of a vibrant Cultural Arts District.

Nearby institutions include the Children’s Museum, the History Center, the future SLO Rep Theatre, and the expanding SLO Museum of Art, according to the release.
