City Council Reviewed and Approved Staff’s Proposed Changes to the Design of the South & King Crossing Improvement Project on June 16, 2026.
On June 16, 2026, the City Council approved changes to the South & King Crossing Project to move forward with installation of a full traffic signal, instead a pedestrian hybrid beacon, as previously planned.
The approved changes were based on community feedback and are intended to provide an intersection design that best serves the access and safety needs of all road users. This change reflects
Improvements to the South Street and King Court intersection are supported by the City’s adopted Active Transportation Plan, Safe Streets Action Plan, and Vision Zero policies to improve safety for all road users, particularly on primary routes to school. The project will improve connectivity to nearby Meadow Park, Hawthorne Elementary School, the King-Nipomo Neighborhood Greenway, and nearby residences.
Upcoming Construction Schedule
Construction began spring of 2026 and has been on pause for as the City awaits installation of electrical service by PG&E and delivery of traffic signal equipment.
Construction is expected to begin again in early-July to late summer 2026 to install signal pole foundations, underground electrical work, and pedestrian curb ramps. Following this work, construction will again be paused until later this fall when remaining electrical equipment is anticipated to be delivered. Construction is expected to be complete by early 2027.
