Community Invited to Celebrate 30 Years of San Luis Obispo Greenbelt Protection with Several Activities and Events This Summer.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the San Luis Obispo Greenbelt and the City of San Luis Obispo invites community members to participate in several activities and events this summer to celebrate.

The City has organized the following events in June, July and August to bring the community together and celebrate the intentional effort to protect the San Luis Obispo Greenbelt, one of our community’s most prized shared possessions.

Attendees will be offered a special commemorative SLO Greenbelt 30th Anniversary bandana. Those who cannot attend one of these events are encouraged get outside, enjoy the SLO Greenbelt, and explore new trails on their own. Anyone who visits all 12 open spaces is eligible to receive a bandana! Please send an email to lbaesemann@slocity.org to request a commemorative bandana.

While the City acquired its first open space property at the turn of the 20th century, the City formally established its Greenbelt Protection Program in 1995 and work officially began in 1996. Since then, the City has built a beloved land conservation legacy. If you’ve ever wondered why the hills in and around our City remain beautiful natural landscapes, you can thank the Greenbelt Protection Program, which permanently conserves and protects prime agricultural land, sensitive wildlife habitat, and scenic land surrounding San Luis Obispo.

Today, over 8,000 acres have been safeguarded for these purposes, and protecting San Luis Obispo’s Open Space continues to be a community priority and adopted by the City Council as a Major City Goal.
