On Saturday, May 9, 2026, at approximately 4:30 pm, San Luis Obispo Police and Fire Department personnel received 911 calls regarding a vehicle versus bicyclist at DeVaul Park near Spooner Drive and Welsh Court.
The injured bicyclist was a 12-year-old child on an electric bike. The child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The child sustained major injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being flown out of the area due to the significant nature of their injuries.
The driver of the involved vehicle is a San Luis Obispo resident and is cooperating with the investigation.
Impairment appears not to be a factor in the collision. The SLOPD Severe Collision Investigative Detail (SCID) responded to take over the investigation.
The child has undergone several surgeries and is currently in stable condition in an out-of-area trauma center.
