Former Goleta Residents Charged with Child's Death
updated: Jul 15, 2015, 4:20 PM

By the Dedicated Staff of edhat.com

A 9-year-old boy, who has ties to the Goleta area, passed away in Maryland after alleged physical abuse.

The Herald-Mail reports 26-year-old Oriana Iris Garcia, the boy's mother, and 23-year-old Jacob Andrew Barajas, the uncle, were arrested and held on $5 million bail on Monday by the Hagerstown, Maryland Police department. The mother's boyfriend was previously arrested for severely discipling the child after he allegedly ate cake without permission.

An edhat subscriber reports the 9-year-old boy, Jack Kirby Garcia, attended Ellwood Elementary School in Goleta earlier this year before moving to the east coast.

The incident took place on June 30th and Jack passed on July 5th from his injuries. Robert Leroy Wilson, Oriana's boyfriend, was previously arrested for first-degree physical abuse of a child resulting in severe physical injury and other offenses. His bond was set at $1 million and those charges are expected to be upgraded as a result of the boy's death.

Oriana Garcia and Barajas were recently arrested as police learned they were planning to fly to the West Coast. The charging documents for Barajas and Garcia state that Jack Garcia's injuries were "consistent with torture" and included extensive blunt force trauma injuries to the head and brain, and bruising to the body consistent with blunt or compressive force.
