The radiant starlight of Zoe Saldaña shone brightly at the Arlington Theatre on Thursday night, where she was honored with the American Riviera Award at the 40th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF).
Recognized for her significant contributions to American Cinema, Saldaña was celebrated amidst an evening of fond anecdotes and praises for her extraordinary talents.
A host of industry luminaries, including Rob Lowe who presented the award, and Scott Feinberg, the night’s moderator, gathered to pay tribute to Saldaña’s illustrious career. Over the past two decades, Saldaña has become an iconic fixture on the silver screen, with her name becoming synonymous with some of the highest-grossing films of all time, such as “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame.”

Saldaña’s recent portrayal of Rita Moro Castro in the Netflix hit “EMILIA PÉREZ” has been particularly lauded for its transformational performance, bringing to life a complex, multifaceted character and earning her the Best Actress accolade at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024. Her role was a testament to her philosophical approach to her craft, which she shared with the audience during the award presentation.
Reflecting on her early career, Saldaña credited her background in dance for her ability to embody characters fully: “I don’t think I would have been able to book Avatar or Gamora or Colombiana [without dance].”
She also reminisced about her time on “The Terminal,” where she was mentored by none other than Steven Spielberg, who advised her that understanding one’s past is key to moving forward – a notion that has clearly influenced her approach to roles and her career trajectory.

On the subject of the record-breaking film “Avatar,” Saldaña noted the initial uncertainty surrounding the movie’s release, saying, “It was a surreal experience. I was taking it all as it came and just happy to be a part of it.”
Her relationship with cinema has been one of introspection and emotional engagement, as evidenced by her roles in movies like “Colombiana” and “Infinitely Polar Bear,” which explore themes of grief and family – topics that resonate deeply with Saldaña.
Saldaña continues to push boundaries, evident in her enthusiasm for her role in “Emilia Pérez,” which tackles the profound quests for redemption and self-discovery: “We are really challenging ourselves to find a deeper meaning about what redemption means to you.”

Aside from her acclaimed acting prowess, Saldaña’s behind-the-scenes work as an executive producer for “THE ABSENCE OF EDEN” and her starring role in Taylor Sheridan’s “Lioness” highlight a career that is as multifaceted as the characters she portrays.
The American Riviera Award, previously bestowed upon the likes of Mark Ruffalo and Kristen Stewart, is a milestone in Saldaña’s career, spotlighting her journey from a young dancer to one of the most compelling and versatile actors in the industry today.
Actor and Montecito resident Rob Lowe presented the award. As the applause echoed through the historic Arlington Theatre, it was clear that Zoe Saldaña’s impact on American Cinema has been profound, and this celebratory event was but a reflection of her lasting legacy in storytelling.
