YMCA and Local Philanthropist to Launch Transitional Housing for Youth

The Channel Islands YMCA, in partnership with local philanthropist Steve Lyons, is excited to announce the launch of a new housing program for transitional-age youth in Santa Barbara County. Located on De La Guerra Street, the residence, called “My Home at The Lyons House,” will open in early 2025 and provide critical support for young adults aging out of foster care.

Steve Lyons, a dedicated community supporter, donated the property to give youth a safe and supportive environment as they work towards independent adulthood. “The YMCA is thrilled to be part of this transformative project,” said Margo Byrne, CEO of the Channel Islands YMCA. “This gift will profoundly impact young adults transitioning out of foster care, helping them build successful futures.”

The program will house nine young adults, ages 18-21, in a “dorm-style” residence, staffed by a clinical director and resident assistants. Youth will receive counseling, case management, and participate in workshops, outings, and group activities aimed at developing essential life skills. The initiative is licensed by the California Community Care Licensing Division.

The Santa Barbara Foundation and other local supporters, including the Whimsie Fund, Gainey Family Foundation, and Chumash Foundation, have joined as initial donors. Additional funding is still needed. For those interested in supporting this vital program, please contact Jennifer Heinen-Stiffler, Chief Operating Officer, at jennifer.heinen-stiffler@ciymca.org.
